| Father's Day
My father was admitted to Atlantic City Memorial Hospital last month, suddenly, with an acute and mysterious infection that was causing him an inordinate amount of pain. My mother called me in LA on my cell phone, sounding rather frantic, and begged me to locate for her the telephone number of my father's cardiologist in Philadelphia. They had just gotten back from their annual winter hibernation in Florida, and my mother was temporarily without her address book. My father, as I may have mentioned in a previous column, has a severe heart condition. In fact, while I was still living in Japan he was admitted to the hospital with a major heart attack. The doctors said that without a heart transplant, he would not live more than three months. That was in 1993. He has been going on with his own heart ever since, without having been subjected to major surgery and the necessity of taking medication constantly for the rest of his life. He is weaker than before, with much less energy, and can't do some of the things he used to be able to do. But he is happy. And he is well-loved by his family. So because they were about one hundred miles from his regular cardiologist, my mother took my father to Atlantic City Memorial Hospital to see about the infection. They didn't happen to have a cardiologist on duty at the time, so they admitted him for observation. Because of his heart problems, all new medicines need to be cleared by his heart doctor before he can take them so that they don't interfere with his heart medication. It ended up that my poor daddy was stuck in this hospital for close to a week, until they decided that it was just a simple infection that could be easily cured by antibiotics, which were subsequently okayed by his own doctor in Philadelphia. Now, on to Father's Day. I hate to say that it was because of this hospital incident that I chose to fly home from LA and see my folks, but that was definitely the deciding factor. And I am so glad I we I flew into Philadelphia Saturday night, the 16th of June, and my buddy Irene picked me up at the airport. (You remember Irene - she came to visit me last August in LA...) I stayed at her brand new house my first night in town(she just bought it in March) in the up and coming neighborhood of Northern Liberties, and we drank wine and talked well into the night. The next day -- Father's Day itself -- my brother, Robert, picked me up at Irene's at 11am. After a quick tour of the new house, Rob and I drove down to Atlantic City. My parent are staying the entire month of June at the Tropicana hotel and casino! They intend to stay the entire summer in Atlantic City, and they are moving into a real apartment on July 1st for the rest of their stay. But my mother (amazing shopper that she is) managed to rent a room at the Trop for the month for much less than an apartment would have cost for the same time! We finally got down the shore at 1pm, and met my parents up in their room. It was so good to see them both. Mom looked very happy, and Dad was in surprisingly good shape for a man who had just spent a week in a hospital! I stayed in Atlantic City for the next three days, and I will tell you all about our adventures in gambling, board-walking, beaching, apartment-hunting, eating, and eating, and eating.... In my next column. In Atlantic City, Cara Jones |
