| The Flat Tire An old pop song goes: "It never rains in California...", but we know THAT is not true! However, there is one thing that most people have gotten right about LA. You can't walk in this city. Don't get me wrong - you can hike, roller blade, bicycle, and jog. You just cannot walk and actually get around in Los Angeles. I tested this in my own personal experience, today. Today I had an audition for a CD-Rom game. I was very excited about the audition, because I loved working on such games as Shenmue, Arc the Lad II, Einhander, and Tekken 3 in the past. I downloaded the scripts and practiced them several times. I planned on arriving at the studio early, in order to psych myself into the right state of mind, and further practice my characters. However, there was a glitch. My car got a flat tire!!! It actually happened while I was parked in front of my friend Andrew's all day yesterday. Andrew and I met at his place and went out with another friend for coffee at a really hip coffeehouse in Santa Monica called Anastasia's. Then we had Ahi tuna burritos at my favorite place for lunch (yum!), went to his mom's house so Andrew could walk the dog, and didn't get back to his apartment till rather late in the evening. By the time I left Andrew's place, it was after 10pm. Andrew walked me to the car, and I drove about one block before I heard some shouting. I thought it was just some people being loud and obnoxious, so I continued to drive. It was actually Andrew yelling after me, but I was already gone. Well, I only had to drive a block or so before I figured out something was wrong, so I pulled into a one-man gas station and cajoled the attendant to help me put air in my tire -- I'd never done that before! I made it home, parked the car in the garage, and forgot about it. This morning I checked it and it seemed ok, so I pulled out of my driveway to go to the audition, with just enough time to spare. My tenant, Lee, was actually having someone jump-start his car in the driveway this morning too. (He had apparently left the lights on.) So, I drove a block or so out of my driveway, and heard this funny sound and I just knew it was the same tire. So I pulled over on the side of the road, about a block away from my house. Luckily, Lee was driving right behind me. He wasn't in a hurry, so he took me to drop the car at the mechanic, and then drove me all the way to my audition!!!! My audition slot was 12:30 in the afternoon, and thanks to Lee I got there JUST in time. And I should have known - the auditions were running quite late. I finally got in to see the directors at about 1:30pm. I had paced the waiting room, listened to another auditioning actor go on and on in a most booming voice about some bad job he did recently, I commiserated with another woman who had smartly relocated to the elevator lobby to practice her lines. By the time I auditioned I had almost forgotten about my car, but was soon to be painfully (and I mean painfully!) reminded. More on that next time. Till then, be well! In Los Angeles, Cara Jones |

「It never rains in California・・・」なんて歌が昔ありましたが、誰もそれがほんとだなんて思っていません! それよりも、LAについてほとんどの人が納得している事実がひとつあります。それは「LAは歩けない」ってこと。 ロサンゼルスにて 翻訳:山本なむを
