| The Sushi Spot Today I had a salsa-and-sushi date. My friend Tom, with whom I have gone salsa dancing a few times here in LA, came over this afternoon and we practiced our moves on my hardwood floors. A barefoot salsa party. Tom is a keyboard player, and he plays with several salsa groups around town. He has also been dancing for years, and is much, much better than I am! He even danced salsa in Israel, where he lived for several years. But Tom had knee surgery a while ago, and is just now getting back into dancing. I, on the other hand, have been out of the salsa loop myself recently, mostly because I have been very busy. So I think at last we might be better matched. We put on some slower salsa numbers and danced specific combinations for an hour or so, and then called it quits before Tom's knee would start to hurt. Then, we went out for sushi! Tom had been telling me about his favorite sushi spot for months. In fact, it's called "The Sushi Spot"!!! I knew it has to be good, but I wasn't prepared for just how good it really was. It was Monday night and around 9pm by the time we got to the Sushi Spot, about a twenty minute drive from my house. The place was near empty, only two couples sitting at the sushi bar. We were seated at the bar, right in front of a sushi chef named "Taku". I knew that because his name was written right there on his chef's hat. Taku looked up and smiled at us as we sat down, and I immediately liked him. Turned out... he was the owner! Because he gave me such a nice, warm smile, I was moved to do something I rarely do -- speak to him in Japanese. I casually asked, "What's good today?" and Taku recommended the snapper and the flounder. Tom and I proceeded to have one of almost everything, ooh-ing and ah-ing as we went. It was superb sushi! Taku and I talked about his restaurant and my career, and I promised to go back real soon! ... Well, "real soon" came real soon! Last night I went AGAIN with my friend Andrew. We met at the Sushi Spot (19658 Ventura Blvd. in Tarzana) at 7pm. Actually, I got there a bit early because I wanted to make sure we got a seat at the bar in front of Taku. I had called ahead to make that request, but they wouldn't let me reserve anything other than a table, which we didn't want. I walked in around quarter to seven, and everyone shouted "Irasshaimase!" to me. When Taku looked up and saw me, he gave me a big smile. Luckily, there were two spaces available right in front of him, and I was seated there. I told him how wonderful the meal was the other night, and that I couldn't wait to come back. Andrew arrived a few minutes after seven. I introduced him to Taku, and we asked what was good today. This time it was the tuna, the bonito, and another fish in the bonito family that Taku most heartily recommended. So we started there. The tuna had an almost transparent taste; the bonito was perfect; but I really loved the other fish in the bonito family who's name I didn't quite catch. In fact, when I ordered it, I asked for "that relative of the bonito," and Taku smiled. Whatever it was melted in my mouth and made my eyes go wide. We later had one of Taku's specialty items -- a pile of spicy tuna on a toasted flat cake of rice. I think he called it "spicy tuna on crispy rice," which would make sense. Andrew loved that. As usual, I finished off with an order of uni which, again, was to die for. I told Taku I was in "uni heaven". And to thank him, I gave him a copy of my new album "NOW". I think he was really surprised that I did, but seemed quite happy and told me he would listen to it later. I'm afraid to tell too many people how good the Sushi Spot is -- I'm afraid it'll get so crowded that I won't be able to get a seat anymore! But I gotta tell it like it is. It's the best. | スシスポット 今日は、サルサ＆寿司デートの日でした。 友人のトムとは、ＬＡに来てから何度か一緒にサルサを踊りに行った仲。その彼が今日の午後うちにやってきて、ハードウッドの床の上でダンスの練習をしたんです。裸足のサルサパーティーです。 トムはキーボードプレイヤーで、ＬＡのサルサグループとも何度か共演しているんですよ。ダンスの経験も長くて、私なんかよりずーっとずーっと上手なんです！ イスラエルに何年か暮らしてたみたいなんだけど、その時もサルサは続けてたんだって。 でも、この前膝の手術をしなきゃならなくなっちゃって、今はダンスの練習を再開したばっかりなんです。私はというと、最近は忙しくてサルサの練習もすっかりごぶさた。だから、今ならトムと一緒に踊れるかなって思ったんですよね。 選んだ曲はスローなサルサナンバー。いくつかのコンビネーションを1時間ほど練習しました。トムの膝が痛み出す前に練習を切り上げて、いざお寿司屋さんへ！ トムのお気に入りのお寿司屋さんの話は何カ月も前から聞いていたんです。その名もスシスポット！ 「おいしいんだろうなー」とは思ってたけど、まさかここまでおいしいとは！ その日は月曜日。車で20分ほどのところにあるスシスポットに着いたのは夜の９時ごろでした。店はガラガラで、２組のカップルがカウンターにいるだけ。私たちもカウンター席に座ることにしました。目の前にいたのが、「タク」という名前の寿司シェフ。名前がわかったのは、彼の帽子に書いてあったからなんだけど。私たちが席に着くと、タクは顔を上げてニッコリと微笑みました。私はすぐに彼のことが気に入っちゃいました。後でわかったんだけど、なんと彼がこの店のオーナーだったのです！ 彼の笑顔があまりにステキでやさしそうだったので、私はめずらしく日本語で話しかけたくなりました。「今日は何がオススメ？」私は何気なく聞いてみました。タクのオススメはタイとヒラメでした。 トムも私も、「ああ！」とか「うう！」とか言いながら、メニューのほとんどを食べ尽くしました。もうほんとにおいしかったんだから！ タクのお店の話や私の経歴のことで話が盛り上げリ、「また近いうちに来るからね！」と言って店を後にしました。 ・・・しかし、「近いうちに」がこんなに早くくるとは！ 実は昨日も行っちゃったんです。スシスポット（19658 Ventura Blvd. in Tarzana）で７時にアンドリューと待ち合わせて。私はどうしてもタクの前の席に座りたかったから、少し早めにお店に行きました。予約の電話を入れたんだけど、テーブル席しか予約できないって言われたんです。テーブル席なんて座りたくないんだもん。 私が店に着いたのは７時15分前。店に入ると、「いらっしゃいませ！」という大きな声が。顔を上げたタクは、私を見るとニコニコ笑って挨拶してくれました。運良く、タクの前の席が２つ空いていました。私はその席に座って、この前のお寿司がとってもおいしかったこと、ここに来るのが待ちきれなかったことをタクに話しました。 ７時過ぎ、アンドリューもやってきました。私は彼をタクに紹介し、「今日のオススメ」を聞いてみました。この日のタクのオススメは、マグロとカツオ、それにカツオの仲間のなんとかいう魚。とりあえず、その３つを握ってもらうことにしました。マグロはほとんどクセのない味で、カツオも最高においしかったー。でも、それよりおいしかったのがカツオの仲間のなんとかいう魚！ 名前がよくわかんなくて、注文する時も「カツオの親戚 ください！」って言ったら、タクに笑われました。名前はともかく、その魚は口の中でとろけるような味わいで、もうびっくりするくらいおいしいんです！ その後、タクのオススメの１品を頼みました。平たく握ったご飯を軽く焼いて、その上にスパイシーなマグロを乗っけてあるんです。たぶん「パリパリごはんのスパイシーツナ乗せ」とかそんな名前だったと思います。アンドリューはこれがすごく気に入ったみたい。締めくくりは、いつものようにウニ。私、ウニが大好きなんですよ。思わずタクに「ウニ天国だー」って言っちゃった。帰り際、私のニューアルバム「ＮＯＷ」のＣＤを１枚、タクにプレゼントしました。おいしいお寿司のお礼にね。タクは驚いたみたいだけど、すごくうれしそうに「後で聴いてみます」って言ってくれました。 ほんとは、スシスポットのことを大勢の人に言いたくないんです。だって、あんまりお店が流行っちゃったら、私の席がなくなっちゃうでしょ！でも、話さずにはいられないんです。スシスポットはナンバーワンです！ ロサンゼルスにて 翻訳：山本なむを
