Still Unpacking!
Yesterday was Friday, April 13th. That means it is exactly six months since the movers delivered (most of) my shipment from my hometown of Philadelphia. October 13th was the fateful day when the movers dropped off 179 of 187 boxes. After that day I spent two or three months steadily and earnestly opening boxes and giving all of my belongings a new home, inside my new home! Many of these items had been packed for ten or even fifteen years, and I continued to encounter things I didn't even remember I owned. Most of all, I was surprised at the number of books I had accumulated over the years. Boxes and boxes and boxes of them! After unpacking the furniture, the clothing, and the items I needed for work, I made the conscious decision to take a break and leave the books and the CDs for later. Well, "later" ended up being four months later! Two weeks ago I summoned the energy to pick up where I had left off last winter. I started with the CDs...
So I took a break from the CDs and I started on the books. Well guess what -- this house of a two-time graduate of Harvard University has NO BOOKSHELVES! I didn't realize it until this second stage of the unpacking, but my new house didn't have any bookshelves. Moreover, there was no place to PUT a bookshelf, even if I had one! Again, HELP!!!! Ikea to the rescue. So I went to my favorite madhouse of a store. Ikea. Do they have Ikea in Japan? I heard that there is one in Taiwan, but I never saw a branch in Tokyo.... Anyway, one day I went by myself, bought several DIY ("Do It Yourself") bookcases, and took them out to my car on a dolly. Well -- the bookshelves I chose were seven feet tall, and try as I might, I could not fit them into my little Nissan! So I had to return them, then and there. Waited in line for 40 minutes to do it, too! That was several weeks ago, and since that time I have been searching for someone with a van or an SUV to help me transport my bookcases home. Then I thought of Marco! I met Marco Octavio in February at the NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Program) workshop I have already told you about, and we have gone out several times. He has a great, black SUV, and so I got up the courage and did what I rarely do -- I asked for help. He said he would be glad to help me get the bookshelves, so last Saturday we made a day-trip to Ikea. Marco ended up buying several things too (which made me feel better about dragging this nice guy shopping!) and he helped me pick out and carry one large and two small bookcases, as well as another CD case. With a little effort, they fit into his SUV (god bless the SUV) and we took them home and put them in my garage. By this time it was after 9pm and we were both very hungry, so I took him out for sushi to thank him. That was an experience in itself, and I will write more about it in my next column. The next day was Sunday, and I spent most of it assembling the bookshelves we had bought. My friend David came by unannounced midday on Sunday and he was just in time to help put together the seven footer which I would never be able to do myself. We bolted them to the wall for extra reinforcement in the event of an earthquake, and I have been unpacking, organizing, and shelving the books ever since. My garage is now about halfway there -- still quite a mess, but on it's way to being organized. At least the books are unpacked! In Los Angeles, Cara Jones |

| 荷物の山、いまだ片付かず！
昨日は４月13日金曜日。つまり、フィラデルフィアの実家から送った荷物が到着して、ちょうど６カ月が過ぎたということなのです。 引越し屋さんが179個の荷物（もともとは187個あったんだけど）を運んできたのは、忘れもしない10月13日。それからの２〜３カ月というもの、毎日毎日必死になって箱を開け、新居の片付けにいそしんでいた私だったのです。 ここ10年間（下手すると15年間）開けたこともないような箱がいっぱいあって、中からは「こんなの持ってたっけ???」と思うようなシロモノが出てくる、出てくる！ 中でも、本の多さには自分でもびっくり。何年もかけて集めましたからねー。そりゃもう、何十箱もあるんですから！ とりあえず家具を箱から出して、服とか仕事に必要なものなんかは先に片付けちゃったんです。で、本とＣＤについては、落ち着いてから片付けようと思って放っておいたんですよね。 「落ち着いてから」なんて言ってたら、４カ月もたっちゃったんだけど・・・。 そうやって去年の冬からずーっと置きっぱなしになっていたんだけど、「思い切って片付けちゃうかー！」って思ったのが２週間ほど前のこと、まず手始めにＣＤから片付けようと。
しょうがないので、とりあえずＣＤのことは忘れて本の方を片付けようと思ったんだけど・・・なんとこの家には本棚というものがないんです！ ハーバード大を２回卒業した人（つまり私です）の家に本棚がひとつもないなんて！ 今回荷物を片付けるまでそれに気付かなかった私も私だけど、とにかくこの家には本棚がひとつもないんです。それにですよ、本棚があったとしてもそれを入れる場所がない！ ああ、ほんともう、どうにかしてくれぇ〜！ そこに救いの神「アイキア様」が！ 「アイキア」というのはお店の名前で、私の大のお気に入りなんです。とりあえずその店に行こうと思って。「アイキア」って日本にもあるのかな？ 台湾に１軒あるって聞いたことがあるけど、東京では見たことがないような。ま、ともかく、ある日その店に行って、DIY（"Do It Yourself"＝日曜大工のことですね）の本棚を買ったんです。その本棚を台車に乗せて駐車場に運んでったんだけど、なにせ高さが７フィート（約2.1メートル）もあるもんだから、私の小さなニッサンには入らないんです！ どうしようもないから、返品しましたよ。さらに40分も列に並んでね！ それが２〜３週間前の話。それ以来、大きなバンかSUV（スポーツ汎用車）を持ってる人が誰かいないか探してたんです。本棚を運んでもらおうと思って。そこで思い出したのがマルコのこと。 NLP（Neuro-Linguistic Program）のワークショップのことは前にもお話したと思うけど、マルコとはそこで知り合ったんです。彼とは何度か一緒に出かけたことも。そういえば彼が大きな黒のSUVに乗ってたんですよね。あまり人に頼みごとをする私ではないんだけど、今回は勇気を振り絞ってマルコにお願いしてみたんです。そしたら彼は快くＯＫ！ さっそく先週の日曜日、２人でアイキアに行ってきました。マルコも自分のものをいくつか買っていたみたいで、私も少し安心（だって、１日中私の買い物につき合わせてばかりじゃ気の毒でしょ）。私が買ったのは、大きい本棚ひとつと小さい本棚ふたつ、それにＣＤケースをもう１台。荷物を運ぶのもマルコが手伝ってくれて大助かりでした。 荷物を積むのにはちょっと苦労したけど、なんとか無事SUVに収まってくれました（神サマ、仏サマ、SUVサマ！）。家に着いてガレージに荷物を降ろした頃にはすでに夜の９時で、おなかもペコペコ。マルコにお礼もしたかったので、お寿司屋さんに行くことにしました（そこでの出来事は次のコラムをお楽しみに！）。 次の日は日曜日。ほとんど１日中、本棚を組み立てていました。友達のデイビッドが突然やってきたのは、ちょうどお昼頃。彼のおかげで高さ７フィートの本棚も無事組み立てることができました。私ひとりじゃ無理だったかもね。できあがった本棚は壁にボルトで留めてあるので地震対策もバッチリ。その日以来、箱を開けて本を整理し、その本を本棚に入れるという毎日を続けている私です。 ガレージの荷物もようやく半分に減ってきました。まだまだひどい状態だけど、とにかくきれいになりつつあります。とりあえず、本の箱は全部片付いたしね！ ロサンゼルスにて 翻訳：山本なむを
