A Weekend In the City (Part II)
I was staying with my friend Rick, whom I had met at the Nagano Olympics, in his amazing pad in New Jersey with the breathtaking view of Manhattan. We went to bed rather late because we had a lot of catching up to do. When I got up the next morning around 10:30 (!), Rick was already gone. Rick's present job is doing audio for the Charlie Rose show. One of the more serious as well as one of the most well-loved talk shows on American television, the Charlie Rose show always has incredible guests. Whether heads of state or Grammy-winning musicians, controversial writers or pop culture heroes, his guests are the movers and the shakers of the world we live in. When I got into town, the first thing Rick told me was that Charlie's guest on Friday was none other than Glen Ballard, the music producer. He quickly added the fact that I was invited to attend the taping!!!! Swoon! Glen Ballard is probably best known for co-writing and producing the album that made "Alanis Morrisette" a household name around the world. He has also worked with everyone from Aerosmith to Belinda Carlisle. Most recently, he produced the new Dave Matthews Band album, which upon its release immediately shot up the charts and is played constantly on radio stations around the country at the moment. It's funny, but many years ago a director I was working with was intent on setting me up with Glen to do an album together. But alas, that was not to happen at that time. So, when Rick said I could meet him, I jumped at the opportunity. In fact, night-owl Cara Jones even got up after nowhere near enough sleep just to make it to the studio on time. Actually, I turned out to be quite lucky that day. The taping was scheduled to start at 11 AM and go until 1 PM. I got up at 10:30, jumped in the shower, threw on my clothes, and ran to catch the bus into Manhattan. I even took a cab from Port Authority to Bloomberg television studios where Charlie tapes the show, even though it was easily within walking distance. When I got there, I was told that Charlie was an hour and half late! I love Charlie!!! I actually had to wait in the food court (Bloomberg is such a cool place -- there is a free, voluminous food court for guests, personalities and employees alike in the lobby of the studio.) I got myself some coffee, grabbed a banana and a Rice Krispy treat for breakfast (healthy, huh?), and waited to be escorted into the audio booth where Rick was working. While I was waiting, though, I saw all kinds of TV personalities walk through the lobby. When I caught sight of Ron Insana, a financial anchor of the very popular CNBC network that my parents watch daily, I had to call them and tell them the news! Luckily, the phones were free too! I was finally taken into the studio and I ended up seeing the entire interview -- both of them, actually. The first was with choreographer Mark Morris. And then Glen came on. And what an intelligent, interesting person he turned out to be. I enjoyed every second of the interview, and looked forward to shaking his hand. However, because the whole show had run so late, when the interview wrapped up, Glen had to leave. But my dear friend Rick -- he grabbed my new CD (NOW) and ran to where Glen was, thrust the CD into his hands, looked meaningfully into his eyes and said, "You have to hear this CD. I think you will really like it." Glen reportedly looked at the CD, then looked back up at Rick. Then looked at the CD again, then back up at Rick. My best buddy secured a promise from the producer that he would at least flip through the tracks, shook his hand on it, and came back to me with the good news. And man, was I thrilled! I mean, how often is it you get the chance to hand someone like Glen Ballard a copy of your work? Not too often. Rick and I celebrated with another trip to the food court, and then we headed to Soho for my recording session with Yukiyo Nakamura. What a way to start a great weekend! In New York, Cara Jones |

ニューヨークの週末 パート２
ニューヨークでは、リック（長野オリンピックで知り合った友達）の家に泊めてもらいました。ニュージャージーの彼のアパートメントは信じられないくらい豪華で、窓からはマンハッタンの素晴らしい景色が見えるんです。話したいことが山ほどあって、ベッドに入ったのはかなり遅くなってからでした。次の朝、目覚めて時計を見るとなんと10時半（！）。リックは既に出かけてしまったあとでした。 リックは現在、「チャーリー・ローズ・ショー」で音声の仕事をしています。「チャーリー・ローズ・ショー」はアメリカで最も人気のあるトークショーのひとつで、内容は至ってマジメ。この番組には、いつも大物ゲストが登場するんですよ。州知事にグラミー賞ミュージシャン、話題の作家にポップカルチャーのヒーロー・・・時代を動かし、話題になっている人たちがゲストとしてやってくるんです。 ニューヨークに着いたとき、リックが最初にこう言いました。 「金曜日のチャーリーのゲストは、なんとあのグレン・バラードなんだよ！ 音楽プロデューサーの！」 さらに彼は「収録に連れてってあげるからね！」と言ってくれたのです!!!!! うわあああああ、気絶しそう！ グレン・バラードは、アラニス・モリセットのアルバムに曲を提供し、プロデュースを手がけたことで有名な人物です。このアルバムによってアラニスの名前が世界中に知れ渡ることになったんです。彼は、エアロスミスからゴーゴーズのベリンダ・カーライルまで、さまざまなアーティストと一緒に仕事をしています。最近ではデイブ・マシューズ・バンドのニューアルバムも手掛け、このアルバムはリリース直後にいきなりヒットチャートをのぼりつめました。ラジオを聞いてても、彼らの曲がよく流れてますよ。 何年も前の話なんだけど、その頃一緒に仕事をしていたディレクターが、私とグレンのアルバムを作ろうと言い出したことがあったんです。悲しいかな、そのときは実現しなかったんだけど。 だから「グレンに会える」ってリックから聞いたときは、もう大喜び！ ところが、宵っ張りのキャラ・ジョーンズさんが寝不足の目をこすりこすり目覚めたのは、収録に間に合うかどうかのぎりぎりの時間だったのです。 でも、この日はほんとラッキーな日でした。収録はもともと午前11時に始まって午後１時に終わる予定だったんです。私が起きたのは10時半。シャワーに飛び込んで、あわてて服を着て、マンハッタン行きのバスに乗るために走って走って・・・。ポート・オーソリティーからブルームバーグ（チャーリーの収録が行なわれるテレビスタジオ）までは、歩いていける距離にも関わらずタクシーに乗っちゃいました。ところが、スタジオに到着すると「チャーリーが１時間半ほど遅れます」という知らせが。もー、チャーリー最高！ 私はフードコートでしばらく待たされることになりました（ブルームバーグっていいところですよー。ゲストやパーソナリティーや従業員のためのスタジオのロビーにフードコートがあるんです。メニューも豊富で、なんと無料）。私はコーヒーとバナナとライスクリスピーを手に入れ（朝ごはん用。ヘルシーでしょ？）、リックが働いているオーディオブースに連れて行ってもらえるのを待ちました。待っている間、ロビーを通 り過ぎていく有名人をたくさん見ちゃった。ロン・インサナを見つけたときなんか、もう大変！ 彼はＣＮＢＣネットワークで経済を担当するニュースキャスターなんだけど、うちの両親がこの番組を毎日見てるんです。だから、思わず両親に電話してしまいました。ラッキーなことに、ここでは電話も無料なんですよ。 そうこうしてる間にスタジオに入る時間になり、私はインタビューの一部始終を見学することができたのでした。それも２人分のインタビュー。最初に登場したのは振付師のマーク・モリス。次がいよいよグレンです。ああ、なんて知的で素敵な人なんでしょう。インタビューの一瞬一瞬を楽しみながら、私は彼と握手することを心待ちにしていたのです。 ところが、収録が遅れたために、グレンはインタビューが終わるとすぐに帰ることに。ここで活躍してくれたのがわが友リック。彼は私のニューアルバム「ＮＯＷ」を手に取ると、駆け足でグレンのところに行き、彼の両手にそのＣＤを押し付けたのです。そして意味ありげにグレンの目を覗き込みながら、「ぜひこのＣＤを聞いてください。きっと気に入りますよ」と言ってくれたんです。 リックの話によると・・・グレンはＣＤを見つめ、それからリックを見つめ、またまたＣＤを見つめ、リックを見つめたそうです。そして「とりあえず聞いてみる」というグレンの約束を取り付けたリックは、彼と堅い握手を交わし、私のところに戻って来てそのグッドニュースを知らせてくれました。きゃあー、もう最高でしょー！ グレン・バラードみたいな人に自分のＣＤを手渡せるチャンスなんて一生のうちにどれくらいあると思う？ めったにないに決まってるよね。 リックと私はフードコートに戻って作戦の成功を祝いました。それから、中村幸代さんのレコーディングのためにＳＯＨＯへと向かったのでした。 週末がこんなふうに始まるなんて、最高だと思いません？ ニューヨークにて 翻訳：山本なむを
