| The Contest Hi everyone - Cara here.
To explain the whole story, we have to go back to last June, when one of my songs was entered in the weekly Favorite Song contests. The song that was nominated was "Settle For Love", the last song on my new album, "NOW". Although a ballad, this song has been quite popular among fans and friends alike. It is the story of a man who chooses to compromise, to settle, for a partner who does not fulfill him, instead of fighting to find his true love. It seems to hit a nerve too often. It makes me sad. (To hear "Settle For Love", click here: or go to Cara's MP3.com page: ) But, be that as it may. As a song I am very proud of it, and as a recording, it is one of my favorites on this album. And other people must have liked it too, because it won the preliminary round of the contest and advanced onto the semi-finals. Then, a month later, it won the semi-final round and made it to the finals, which were supposed to be held a few months later. Then came glitch #1: months and months went by and I never heard a word about the final round. I finally wrote in to inquire, and I was told the finals would be held by the end of the year. But the end of the year came and went. As I boarded my flight home from Tokyo from my late January trip, I found out the finals were starting immediately. Which, of course, left me little time to prepare. But as soon as I got home, I prepared newsletters to send to my mailing list of friends, family, fans, and supporters, and I asked them all to vote. You may have seen the request here on my eigoTown.com column, too. I also posted it on my website. Bring on glitch #2: As soon as I sent out my mailings, I checked the contest page on MP3.com (http://www.mp3.com/womenofmp3) only to find that my name wasn't even listed on the ballot!!!! It was an unfortunate oversight, and was corrected immediately by the people running the contest, but I was a little hurt (boo hoo!), but I do feel that I may have lost crucial votes. I am only half-joking when I say, "I Want A Recount!!!!" I never thought I'd utter these words, but I felt strangely close to Al Gore. Like we had a common bond. Or something. So, onto glitch #3: We finally get the ballot straightened out and hopefully everyone is voting fair and square. Then, all of a sudden, the polling software used by the contest crashed, and no one was able to vote. It became a true butterfly ballot. Fans and friends were clicking on the voting links, but they would just get an error, and I am sure many of them soon gave up (I probably would have!). The contest organizers "solved" that problem by changing the voting method to one in which you emailed your vote in to the Women of MP3.com. My people were trying the old method; everyone was confused. Somehow, one of the bands was able to amass a huge number of votes on the old ballot (which mysteriously started working again all of a sudden). But in the end, it was not that band who won. Nor myself. However, the story doesn't end sadly. Although I was upset that the voting process didn't go smoothly, and of course unhappy that I didn't win, the contest put my page at MP3.com (http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/81/cara_jones.html?lang=eng) in the spotlight for a week. And all the attention direction toward the song "Settle For Love' caused that song to go to #1 on the AAA/Adult Alternative Chart!!!! So in the end, all's well that ends well! My song spent three days at #1, and garnered a lot of attention doing so. For those of you who haven't yet explored MP3.com, I strongly suggest you check out what they have to offer. In addition to major label artists like Alanis Morrisette, Dido, Dave Matthews and more, MP3.com offers the unique opportunity to sample the music of up and coming artists from all over the world. There are many Japanese artists there too! And the site will walk you through the process of downloading software to play the MP3s on, if you don't have it already. | コンテスト 皆様こんにちは、キャラです！
実は、私にとっては忍耐、忍耐のコンテストだったんですよ。とにかく問題が多かったんです。この前のアメリカ大統領選にも負けず劣らず、ほんとばかばかしいほどのトラブル続きで・・・ ことの発端は去年の６月。私の曲がフェイバリット・ソング・コンテストの週間ランキングに入ったことから話は始まります。ノミネートされたのは、ニューアルバム「ＮＯＷ」の最後に収録されている「Settle For Love」という曲。この曲はバラードなんだけど、ファンにも友達にもすごく好評なんです。あるひとりの男性が、彼女に対して不満を抱きつつも、静かな生活を送りたいがために妥協していく道を選ぶ、というのが歌詞の内容。ほんとの愛を探すことをやめちゃうんですね。ちょっと古傷に触れるような歌詞で、歌うたびに悲しくなっちゃいます。 （この曲をお聞きになりたい方は、ここをクリック！ またはキャラの MP3.com のページまで） それはともかく、このアルバムの中でも「Settle For Love」は私の大のお気に入り。自分でもいい曲だと思ってるし、レコーディングも素晴らしかったし。他の人たちも同じように感じてくれたみたいで、コンテストの第１ラウンドを勝ち抜き、準決勝にも進むことができました。そして１カ月後、準決勝も勝ち抜いたこの曲は、いよいよ決勝戦へ。２〜３カ月後にはその結果 が出るはずだったのですが・・・ここでひとつトラブルが！ ３カ月が過ぎ、さらに数カ月が経っても決勝についての連絡は一向にやってこない。業を煮やした私は、問い合わせのメールを送ってみました。帰ってきた返事は「年末には最終投票が行われます」。 ところが、大晦日も終わり、新しい年になっても何の音沙汰もありません。１月も終わりに近づいたころ、私は東京から帰る飛行機に乗る直前、明日から決勝戦が行なわれることを知ったのです。準備しようにも、時間がないじゃない！ それでも私は、家に着くとすぐに、友達や家族、ファンの皆さん、応援してくれるサポーターの人たちにメールを送りました。「投票してください」ってお願いのメールを。このエイゴタウンのコラムでも、皆さんにお願いしましたよね。もちろん自分のホームページにも載せましたよ。 さらに第２のトラブルが・・・。 メールを送り終えた私は、さっそく MP3.com のコンテストのページを開いてみたんです。ところがですよ、候補者のリストには私の名前さえ載っていないんです！ なぜか私の名前が見落とされていたみたい。サイアク！ すぐにコンテストの主催者に訂正してもらったけど、ちょっぴり傷ついてしまった（ふえーん！）。きっと、かなりの数の投票を逃してしまったに違いない。 「もう１回、数えなおしてください！」って言っちゃいましたよ。半分冗談だったけど。 自分がこんなこと言うなんて思ってもみませんでした。ゴアさんに変に親近感持っちゃったりして。同志というかなんというか。 さらにさらに第３のトラブルが！ やっと候補者のリストも訂正され、なんとか公明正大な投票が行なわれようとしていたそのとき、突然、投票用のソフトウェアが壊れてしまったんです。まったく投票することができなくなっちゃったんですよ。これじゃあホントに大統領選といっしょじゃないか！ ファンの人たちも友達も、投票用のページにリンクしようとするんだけど、とにかくエラーになっちゃうだけで・・・みんなすぐに諦めちゃっただろうなあ（私でも諦めるっちゅうに！）。 コンテストの主催者は、この問題を「解決」するために投票方法を変更。 「Women of MP3.com」のアドレスにメールを送ってもらうという方法に変えたんです。私の友達やファンは、最初の方法で投票しようとしていたんですね。そりゃあ、みんな混乱しますよね。古い方の投票システムでは、なぜだかあるひとつのバンドにかなりの数の票が集まったらしい（不思議なことに、突然古い方のシステムが動き出したみたいなんですよねえ）。でも、最終的に勝ったのはそのバンドではありませんでした。私でもありませんでした。 でもね、この話はそんな悲劇のままでは終わらなかったんです。投票が順調に進まなかったことにも腹がたったし、勝てなかったのも残念だったけど、そのかわりにこのコンテストおかげで、たくさんの人たちが「Settle For Love」に注目してくれて、「AAA/Adult Alternative Chart」で第１位 になることができたんです。 ま、終わりよければ全てよしって感じかな！ 「Settle For Love」は３日間、１位に輝き、大いに注目を集めることになったんだから。 ところで、まだ MP3.com のページを開いたことがないというあなた、ぜひぜひ１度チェックしてみてくださいね。（もしろん、ここから始めましょうね！） MP3.com では、アラニス・モリセットやダイード、デイブ・マシューズといった有名アーティストはもちろん、世界中のアーチスト、まだアラニスほど有名になっていないアーチストがたくさん紹介されていますよ。日本のアーティストもいっぱい登場してます！ それに、MP3 用のソフトをダウンロードすることもできるから、ソフトを持っていなくてもダイジョーブ！ （マックには「サウンドジャム」、Windows ＰＣを使ってのデジタルジュークボックスを楽しむなら「ミュージック・マッチ」がおすすめです） とにもかくにも、今の音楽業界にとってインターネットは「西部開拓時代のアメリカ」みたいな世界なんですよね。さあ、キャラバン（キャラのバン!?）に乗って、はるかなる地平線を目指そうではありませんか！ ロサンゼルスにて 翻訳：山本なむを
