| Friends and Lovers Winter is a time when warmth is most appreciated and, outside of woolly socks and a warm fire, there is nothing more warming to the body and the soul than closeness with another human being. At 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, we humans make pretty good bed-warmers! This month of February is also the month of the Valentine, and for this reason we female humans especially start to crave the above closeness if we are for some reason not already getting our fill. So we go out and search. In Japan, the search for the perfect bed warmer is made a little easier in February, thanks to the wonderful (although "backwards" to Westerners) tradition of Valentine's chocolates. While in the West, chocolates are given by men to the woman he is with or courting, in Japan women can give prospective partners, friends, and well, any male a sweet token of appreciation with the implied suggestion of a future possibility of romance. When I worked at J-Wave, it was very hard for me to figure out the etiquette surrounding this unique version of Valentine's Day. The idea of "giri chocolate" was heinous to me, yet how can you give "honmei" chocolate in the workplace???? So I started to think of chocolates as the friendly candy. This year -- the first of the new millennium -- is also my first in a new land: Los Angeles. It is also my first February alone in a long time. Luckily, I do have lots of friends. And the strangest thing has been happening recently -- old friends, and mostly male friends at that, have suddenly and mysteriously popped back into my life, some after absences of 10 years or more. First there is John. John is a wonderful guitar and keyboard player who now works for the amp company, Line 6. I met John in 1988, when he was touring with Toni Childs. That is also when I met my future producer (of Pandora's Box), Jimmy Smyth, was playing electric guitar in the same band. John and I hit it off, and saw each other whenever the band came to Boston, where I was living at the time. But after I moved to Tokyo in 1991, we lost touch. When Jimmy and I reconnected in 1996, he gave me John's phone number and email address, and I dropped him a line every so often. But he never responded. Oh, I forgot to mention that John lives in LA. When I moved to LA this summer, I thought of getting in contact with my old friend John, but thought he wouldn't remember me. Then, after I bought my house I decided to have a housewarming party in early December. As a last try, I sent an email invitation to John, never expecting him to come. Well, he did! We have been friends every since, and having someone you have such a long history with when you're in a new city has been really great for me. Then one day in late January..... I went to a yoga class, which ended up being a huge reunion. There is this great-looking yoga center called Angel City Yoga on Ventura Blvd. only a few miles from my home. I pass it often, and many times have thought about going in. Finally, one Friday I stopped in and got a class schedule. The next day I had a lot of free time, so I impulsively decided to take the 1pm yoga class. I got there a little early, laid out my yoga mat, and started stretching on the floor. Shortly thereafter, a guy came up right next to me and spread out his mat just a few inches from mine. He kept looking at me, and I actually got quite uncomfortable and for the rest of the class did everything I could to ignore him. "How rude!" I thought. Here we are to do yoga, not pick up girls!!!! When the class ended I stopped by the ladies room, then took my time rolling up my mat, and when I got out into the lobby and started putting on my shoes, I noticed that the guy was standing right there, as if waiting for me. "Excuse me, are you from Philadelphia?" he asked. Starting to think this was a very unusual pick-up line, I slowly answered "yes.....???" "Are you Cara Jones?" he asked. Now, sure that this was not a pick-up line, I screamed "Yes! Who are YOU???" Turns out it was Sam, a good friend and fellow music-lover from Cheltenham High School. I won't say how many years ago that was, but suffice it to say it was a l o n g time ago! I couldn't believe he recognized me (I was flattered he thought I looked the same!). Sam lived right around the corner from the yoga place, and he had just started taking yoga there too! Unlike me, he'd been in LA for 10 years, and just completed his internship -- he's a doctor! So we exchanged numbers, and talked a while. As I drove home I thought it's so nice to have reconnected with old friends here in this new city. And I know now I will never feel alone here. | 友達がいて、恋人がいて 季節は冬。暖かさが恋しい今日この頃ですね。ウールの靴下や暖炉の炎が暖かいのはもちろんだけど、それよりもあったかいのは誰かがそばにいてくれること。心も体もぽかぽかしてきます。人肌＝約37度、湯たんぽ代わりにちょうどいいでしょ！ ２月と言えばバレンタイン。彼氏のいない女の子たちがロマンスを求めて張り切りだすのも、このバレンタインのせい。だから街に出て、ステキな出会いを求めるわけです。 日本では、２月になるとカップル誕生率がとても高くなります。それもこれも、「バレンタインのチョコレート」という素晴らしい伝統のおかげ。欧米では、男の人が女の人にチョコレートをあげるのが普通 なんです。それも、すでに付き合っている恋人に。 日本の場合、あげるのは女の子の方から。恋人候補の彼だけじゃなく、日ごろお世話になってる男友達なんかにも感謝のしるしにチョコレートをあげたりして。もちろん、ロマンスの可能性もちらつかせたりするんだけど。 J-WAVEで働いていた頃は、この一風変わったバレンタインの風習を理解するのに一苦労しました。「義理チョコ」っていう考え方も嫌いだし、職場で「本命チョコ」をあげるっていうのも変でしょ？ だから私は、バレンタインのチョコレートは単なる「お礼がわりのキャンディーみたいなもの」って考えるようになったんです。 今年は21世紀最初の年。私にとっては、新天地ロサンゼルスで過ごす最初の年でもあります。恋人がいない２月っていうのも久しぶり。でも、たくさんの友達に恵まれた私はラッキーですよね。最近、不思議なくらい昔の友達に再会するんですよね。特に男の友達。どこからともなく、私の人生に再登場って感じで。中には10年以上も会ってなかった人もいたりして。 ジョンとの再会がそのひとつです。ギターとキーボードの名プレイヤーであるジョンは、現在アンプメーカーの「ライン６に勤めています。ジョンと初めて会ったのは、彼が「トニ・チャイルズ」のバンドに加わってコンサートツアーに出ていたときのこと。ジミー・スミスと出会ったのもそのときなんです（彼は後に、私のアルバム「パンドラの箱」をプロデュースすることになります）。ジョンと同じバンドでエレキギターを弾いていたのがジミーだったんです。ジョンとは最初から気が合っちゃって、ボストンに来ると必ず会ってたんです（その頃私はボストンに住んでいました）。でも、1991年に私が東京に移ってからはすっかり音信不通 に。それから５年後の1996年、ジミーと再会。そのジミーからジョンの電話番号とメールアドレスを聞いた私は、何度か連絡をとろうと試みたんです。でも、彼からは何の音沙汰もなく・・・。 あっ、言い忘れてましたけど、ジョンはＬＡに住んでいるんです。ＬＡに引越してきた今年の夏、ジョンに連絡してみようかなとも思ったんですね。でも、私のことなんか覚えていないかなとも思ったりして。その後、私は自分の家を買うことになり、12月の初めに引越し祝いのパーティーを開くことになりました。そのとき、ジョンにもお誘いのメールを送ってみたんです。これで連絡がなかったら、もう一生会うこともないだろうなーなんて思いながら。ところがところが、パーティーに来てくれたんですよ、そのジョンが！ それ以来、ジョンとの友情が復活。知らない町に引越してきて、そこに昔からよく知ってる友達がいるのって、ほんとイイですよ。 そして１月のある日のこと。ヨガのクラスに行った私は、またまた懐かしい人に再会することになるのです。私が行ったのは、「エンジェル・シティー・ヨガ」というヨガセンター。ベンチュラ通 りに建つこの面白そうなセンターは、私の家からほんの数マイルのところにあります。よくその前を通 っていて、何度も入ってみようかなって思ってたんです。ある金曜日、私はセンターに立ち寄って、レッスンのスケジュールをもらいました。翌日はちょうど予定もなかったので、急遽午後１時からのレッスンに参加することにしたんです。 少し早めに到着した私は、さっそく自分のヨガ用マットを床に敷いてストレッチを始めました。すると間もなく、もう一人男の人がやってきたんです。その人、私のマットのすぐ横に自分のマットを敷くんですよ。その上、じーっと私の顔を見たりして。なんかすっごく気持ちが悪いもんだから、レッスン中、ひたすら彼を無視していました。ほーんと失礼なヤツだと思いません？ 私はヨガをするために来てるんだから。ナンパされに来てるんじゃない。 レッスンが終わりました。私はトイレに行ったり、マットをゆっくり片付けたりしてからロビーに出たんです。靴を履こうとすると、なんとさっきの男がまだそこに立っていたんです。まるで待ち伏せしてたかのように。 「あのー、フィラデルフィアの出身だよね？」 ナンパにしちゃあ変わったセリフだな、なんて思いながら恐る恐る 「そうですけど」 と答える私。 「キャラ・ジョーンズさんだよね？」 彼のその言葉を聞いて、これはナンパじゃないとわかりました。私は思わず大きな声で叫んでしまいました。 「そうです！ ところであなたは？」 そこでやっとわかったんです、チェルテンハム高校で一緒だったサムだって。音楽好きの彼とは結構仲が良かったんです。でも、それもずいぶん昔のことなんですけどね（何年前なのかはナイショ）。彼が私に気付いたのにはびっくりしました（「全然変わらないねー」なんて言われて、喜んでしまった！）。サムの家はヨガセンターのすぐ裏なんだけど、私同様、レッスンに出たのはこの日が初めてだったんだって。私とは違って、もう10年もＬＡに住んでるらしいんだけど。彼はちょうどインターンの期間が終わったばかりなんだとか（彼はお医者さんなのです）。 私たちはしばらく立ち話をした後、電話番号を交換して別れました。「知らない町で昔の友達に再会するのって、ほーんといいなあ」なんて思いながら、家路についた私。引越したばかりのこの町だけど、寂しい思いをせずに済みそうです。。 ロサンゼルスにて 翻訳：山本なむを
