Packing, packing, packing. We're still packing!!!

We made it through a fun family reunion at Andrew's Bar Mitzvah, and packed all through the next week. I snuck in a dentist appointment (cause I haven't had time to find new doctors in LA yet), and took care of my last few loose ends.

Then on Tuesday the moving van came for the first portion of my parents' move. My mom and dad had thought there was just too much stuff to move it all in one day, so they contracted with the movers to come twice - one time for the big items (furniture, boxes, etc) and the second time for whatever odds and ends were left.

Well, let me tell you -- WHAT a difference between moving companies! These guys were courteous, respectful, and careful with our belongings. They were quick and nice and went by the rules and had our move, phase #1 done in no time! So we all went out for brunch at the local diner (I had my absolute favorite lox omelette!). And then we came home and packed some more!

My parents' are savers. Keepers. Packrats, actually. Well, to be fair, it's really just my dad. My mom throws things away - -even the things you wish she'd save. My dad has open envelopes and canceled stamps and letters from people he doesn't even remember that are dated more than 40 years ago!

The hardest part about their move, consequently, was getting my dad to go through all his boxes and boxes of papers and memorabilia. A former actor, my dad was in many plays and was very fond of the theatre. And, being a packrat and a former actor, he saved ALL playbills of every theatre production he ever went to. He is 71 years old. That's a LOT of playbills!

Finally.... it was Thanksgiving! But, in true family fashion, ours was not a traditional American Thanksgiving. First of all, Phase 1 of the move had already taken place, so there was no table to eat on or silverware to eat with! Secondly, our family is a very small one, my grandparents in Philadelphia have passed on, and there was no one to invite, and no one to invite us to a traditional dinner.

So.... we went out to eat!
Now, imagine trying to find a restaurant open on the most traditional, stay-at-home holiday of the year. It's kind of like going out to eat on Oshogatsu in Japan. Not gonna happen. Or not easily, anyway.

But my mom went through the phone book and found us a nice restaurant serving dinner on Thanksgiving, and we drove about a half hour to get there, armed with two bottles of wine cause it was BYOB. The restaurant was hopping! Big tables of families having their non-traditional thanksgiving dinners out like us; small tables for couples who maybe didn't have anywhere to go in the area.

We were most surprised that the waitress was so nice -- it must be an awfully hard night to work! Not to mention the fact that she probably would rather be home with her family than serving food to other people's families that night.

But the food was great - I had a walnut crusted salmon fillet with plum sauce (yum!!!), brother Rob had a seafood dish, and both mom and dad suddenly went conservative and had the traditional turkey dinner, complete with stuffing and cranberry sauce! We opened an old bottle of red wine from my dad's wine cellar, and my brother donated a bottle of white to start us off, and we all ended up having a great dinner, and spending some quality family time together on this most family-oriented of American holidays..

荷作り、荷作り、荷作り。引越しの荷作りはまだまだ続行中です！

わがファミリーは、アンドリューの Bar Mitzvah のために家族全員が揃い、楽しい時間を過ごしました。ただしその後には、荷作りに追いたてられる１週間が待っていましたが。そんな中、私は家族の目を盗んで歯医者さんへ（ＬＡで新しい歯医者さんを見つける時間がなかったんです）。治療が途中だった歯も、全部治してもらいました。

そして火曜日、引越しトラック第１弾がやってきました。あまりにも荷物が多すぎて、１日では運びきれないだろうと考えたパパとママは、引越し屋さんに２回来てもらうようにお願いしてあったんです。最初に大きなもの（家具や箱など）を運んでもらって、そのときに運びきれなかった細かいものを２回目に運んでもらおうと考えたみたいです。ここで一言、「引越し屋さんって、ほーんとピンキリですよね！」今回来てくれた引越し屋さんは、とても親切で礼儀正しくって、荷物の取り扱いもすごく慎重。仕事は速いし、感じはいいし、規則はちゃーんと守ってくれるし。彼らのおかげで、引越し第１弾はあっという間に終わってしまい、私たちはブランチを食べに近所の食堂へ（私の大好物のオムレツ！）。食事の後、家に帰ってきた私たちは、再び荷作りを再開！

私の親って、すごく節約家なんです。物を捨てるってことを知らない。ほんと、モリネズミ（巣の中になーんでも蓄えちゃう習性があるネズミ）みたい。もっと正確に言うと、モリネズミなのはパパだけなんだけどね。ママはなんでもすぐに捨てちゃうんです。時々、必要なものまで捨てちゃうくらい。パパの方はというと、開封した封筒や、消印のある切手までとってある。誰にもらったんだかわからないような古い手紙までおいてあって、その日付を見るとなんと40年以上も前！

そんなわけで、今回の引越しで１番問題だったのがパパ。いろんな紙切れや思い出の品が詰まった箱が何個も何個もあるんです。それを整理するのが大変！　うちのパパ、以前は俳優としてたくさんの舞台に出てたこともあるし、演劇が大好きなんです。モリネズミで元俳優のパパは、これまでに行ったお芝居のプログラムをぜーんぶおいてあるんです！　パパ、現在71歳。そりゃあ、びっくりするくらいのプログラムをためこんでましたよ！

そしてついにやってきました。サンクスギビングです。うちの場合、普通の家族とはちょっと違ってますけど。伝統的なアメリカのサンクスギビングじゃなかったですね。まず、食卓がないし、銀の食器もない（引越し第１弾で運ばれていってしまった）。それに、家族が少ない（フィラデルフィアの祖父母はすでに死去）。だから招待する人もいないし、伝統的なディナーに招待してくれる人もいないんです。

というわけで、わがファミリーは外食することになったのです！　１年でいちばんトラディショナルな祝日、みんながお家で過ごす祝日、それがサンクスギビングなんです。こんな日に開いてるレストランなんてあると思います？　日本でいうなら、お正月に外食しちゃうようなもんですよ。誰もそんなことしないでしょー。結構、お店を探すのだって大変なんですから。

ところがうちのママ、開いてるレストランを電話帳で探し出したんです。サンクスギビングのこんな夜に食事を出してくれる奇特なレストランを。「お酒は各自持参で」と言われた私たちは、ワインを２本用意して車に乗り込みました。30分ほどでレストランに到着。レストランの中は、なんと超満員！　大きいテーブルの方には家族が何組か座っていて、私たち同様、トラディショナルなサンクスギビングとは無関係って感じで食事をしていました。小さい方のテーブルには、カップルが２組。たぶん、この辺では他に行くところがなかったんだろうなあ。

私たちがいちばん驚いたのは、ウェイトレスの人の対応がすっごく良かったこと。だって、こんな日に働くのなんて誰だっていやでしょ。彼女だって、サンクスギビングの夜によその家族に料理を出してるより、お家で自分の家族と一緒に過ごしたかったと思いますよ、きっと。

しかし、料理は最高だったなあ。私が注文したのはクルミで覆われたサーモンフィレ、プラムソースがけ（うまそー！）。兄のロブはシーフード。ママとパパはなぜだか突然保守的になっちゃって、お決まりの七面鳥（詰め物入り、クランベリーソースがけ!!!）を頼んでいました。パパのワインセラーから持ってきた年代物の赤ワインを開け、ロブが持ってきた白ワインもみんなで楽しみ、みんな大満足のディナーとなりました。アメリカの祝日の中でも特に家族的なこの日に、私たち一家もすばらしい家族の時間をもつことができたというわけです。
