Cousin Andrew's Bar Mitzvah

Back in July, when I moved to LA, I bought a round trip ticket from Philadelphia. I made the return for November 17th for a very specific reason -- my cousin Andrew was being Bar Mitzvahed the next day.

The Bar Mitzvah (Bat Mitzvah for a girl) is the Jewish coming of age ritual that dates back as far as the Jewish bible, The Torah. Unlike the Japanese "seijinshiki", the Jewish coming of age is rather early -- at age 13. However, that means simply that the boy or girl is an adult in the eyes of god and is allowed to read from the sacred book, the Torah. NOT that he or she is an adult in the eyes of society, and can drink and smoke and everything else! The difference between laws of society and law of god is probably more pronounced now than ever, too. Today, the Bar Mitzvah is really just a ritual, a ceremony, a party, and not a license to behave like a grown-up.

My cousin Andrew (who is actually the son of my first cousin Danielle）is the cutest little red-headed boy you ever saw. He got the red hair from Danielle's husband because, obviously, there is no red hair in my side of the family! Not only adorable, Andrew is bright as the sun. You could tell even when he was a toddler -- this kid is smart!

The nicest part was that even though Andrew rarely saw his cousin Cara who lived in a far away land on the other side of the world, he always remembered me and treated me like his cuz.

Somehow, Andrew became Bar Mitzvah age! And here it was.

My family went to the synagogue in two shifts: mom and dad went earlier to take pictures and help out. My brother Rob and I got to sleep a little longer.

I borrowed my mother's jewelry and purse, but miraculously I did have ONE dress in my possession that hadn't been stolen (or "lost" - that's up to interpretation) by the movers. I even found matching shoes and a shawl (synagogues are modest places, not to mention the fact that it was a summer dress in late November!).

Rob and I arrived at the synagogue right on time, and when we walked into the chapel got to see lots of relatives neither of us had seen in a long time.It was a nice, warm feeling.

The ceremony was performed by a female rabbi (possibly the first I have had the honor of seeing) and was very nice. Andrew was on the podium the entire time, and lead us all from the prayer book in English. Then it was his turn to read from the Torah, which he did like a champ. I got a rush -- like the passing of time, and I felt the warmth and interconnectedness of family like I hadn't in a long time.

All in all, it was a very nice ceremony.

THEN came the party!

As a great institution, the Bar-Mitzvah feast started to spread among the Jewish communities some four hundred years ago. It is obviously not integral to the "coming of age" itself, but it has become the focal point of the experience in modern times.

Andrew's party was held at...... Meiji-en!

Yes, a Japanese restaurant downtown on the waterfront. No, they didn't do it just for me!!!!

The party started with cocktails and softdrinks, and the music was R&B. Early on in the party, the MCs introduced Andrew and his family with great fanfare -- he came in flanked by two dancers!

Then we all went to a huge buffet for brunch -- lox and bagels, and omelette bar where they make your omelette to order, all the goodies! There was more dancing and having fun, and then it was time for the cutting of the cake.

Rather like the cake ceremony of a Japanese wedding, in the Bar Mitzvah party they dedicate one candle to a relative or group of friends or relatives important to the Bar Mitzvah boy. Everyone claps and cheers as Aunt Sadie or cousin Joe get called up to be honored, and light one candle in honor of the new adult.

Well, my mom and dad and bother were all sitting around talking at one of those big party tables when suddenly Rob grabbed me and said "We're up!!!" I couldn't believe it, but there Andrew was, reading a poem he wrote about how nice it was his cousin, the singer, came all the way from LA and his cousin, the lawyer, and his Aunt and Uncle came to his Bar Mitzvah. All four of us went up there, and proud as punch, lit the candle for cousin Andrew.

It was a fun day of family in Philadelphia.

アンドリューの成人式

フィラデルフィアへの往復チケットを買ったのは、去年の７月、ＬＡに引っ越したばかりのときでした。行きのチケットを11月17日にしたのには、特別な理由が。18日に、いとこのアンドリューが「Bar Mitzvah」を迎えることになっていたからです。

「Bar Mitzvah（女の子の場合はBat Mitzvah）」は、ユダヤ教の成人の儀式のこと。その始まりは、ユダヤ教のバイブル「Torah」の時代に遡ります。ユダヤ教では13歳になると成人式を迎えるんですよ。日本よりずっと早いでしょ。神の目から見れば13歳はもう大人で、神聖な書である「Torah」を読むことが認められるんです。でも社会的に大人になったわけではありません。だから、お酒を飲んだり、タバコを吸ったり、その他なんでもできるようになるってわけではないんですよ。社会的な法律と神の法律との違いも、昔よりはっきりとしているようですね。だから今の時代は、儀式的なものとして「Bar Mitzvah」を行なっています。セレモニーやパーティーといった意味合いが強くて、大人のようにふるまえるライセンスを与えるものではないんです。

いとこのアンドリュー（実際は、いちばん年長のいとこであるダニェールの息子です）は、赤毛で超カワイイ男の子です。彼の赤毛が父親（ダニェールのダンナさん）譲りなのは、誰が見ても明らか。だって、ダニェール側の親戚には誰ひとりとして赤毛の人はいないんだから。アンドリューって、ただカワイイだけじゃなく、とっても頭がいいんですよ。よちよち歩きの頃から、みんなに「この子は頭がいい」って言われてたほど。

私とアンドリューってめったに会うことがないんですよね、お互い遠く離れた土地で暮らしているから。でもね、いつも私のことを思っててくれて、ほんとのいとこみたいに接してくれるんです。そこが彼のいいところなんですよね。ま、ともかく、アンドリューも「Bar Mitzvah」を迎える年齢になったというわけです。

家族の温かさを実感

うちの家族は２組に分かれて教会へ。写真撮影やお手伝いを頼まれたママとパパは、一足早く出発。兄のロブと私は、ちょっぴり遅く起きて後から出かけました。アクセサリーやバッグはママから借りたんだけど、ドレスは私自身のもの。引っ越しのときの紛失騒ぎ（というか、盗難騒ぎというか）に奇跡的に巻き込まれなかった唯一のドレスなんです。ドレスに合った靴とショールも見つかりました（教会はとても厳粛な場所なので、ショールは必需品。11月の終わりに夏のドレスを着てたせいもあるんだけど）。

ロブと私は時間どおりに到着。チャペルに入っていくと、長い間会っていなかった親戚たちの姿が。なんだかうれしくて、あったかい気持ちになりました。式を執り行なったのは、女性のラビ（女性のラビにお会いできたのは、これが初めて）。とても素晴らしい式だったんですよ。アンドリューは式の間中、ずっとステージの上にいて、私たちはみんなアンドリューの後に続いて祈りの言葉を唱えました。そしていよいよアンドリューがユダヤ教のバイブル「Torah」を読むときがやってきたのです。アンドリューは堂々として、まるでチャンピオンのようでした。時の経過を感じながら、私の胸は感動でいっぱいに。長い間忘れていた家族の温かさや心の絆をしみじみと感じていました。とにかく、ほんとうに素晴らしい式になりました。

そしていよいよパーティーです！「Bar Mitzvah」のパーティーが慣例的なものとしてユダヤ人の社会に広まったのは、およそ400年前。「成人の日」には必ずやらなければならないってわけでもないんだけど、今ではこのパーティーがすごく重要なものになっているんです。アンドリューのパーティーが行なわれたのは・・・なんと「明治苑」。そうなんです、ウォーターフロントのダウンタウンにある日本食レストランがパーティー会場だったんです。別に、私のために選んでくれたわけじゃないんですよ！カクテルとノンアルコールのカクテルが配られ、パーティーが始まりました。音楽はＲ＆Ｂ。パーティーが始まってすぐ、盛大なファンファーレが鳴り響いて、アンドリューと彼の家族が紹介されました。アンドリューの両脇には、なんとダンサーが２人！　次に私たちを待っていたのは、ブランチのための豪華なビュッフェ。スモークサーモンやベーグルが並び、「オムレツバー」ではお好みのオムレツを焼いてもらえるんです。もう、おいしそうなものばかり～。食べて踊っておおいに楽しんだ後は、いよいよケーキカットの時間です。

「Bar Mitzvah」のパーティーでは、成人を迎えた少年にとって大切な人たち（親戚とか友だちとか）にロウソクが１本ずつ配られるんです。ちょっと日本の結婚式に似てるかなあ。叔母のサディーやいとこのジョーが呼ばれ、新しく大人の仲間入りをしたアンドリューを祝ってロウソクに火を灯します。そのたびに、みんなは拍手喝采。うちのママとパパ、兄のロブは大きなパーティーテーブルを囲んでおしゃべりに花を咲かせていました。そのとき、ロブが突然私の腕をつかんで、こう言いました。「うちの番だってさ」うっそーって感じですよ。アンドリューは、私たちのために書いてくれた詩を読んでくれました。「キャラ、ＬＡからわざわざ来てくれてありがとう。それにロブ、叔父さん、叔母さん、僕のBar Mitzvahに来てくれてありがとう。」私たち４人はステージに上がり、誇らしげな気持ちでアンドリューのためにロウソクに火を灯しました。フィラデルフィアのわが家族にとって、とても楽しい１日となりました。
