Home At Last

My new living room - almost complete!

Well, I'm finally settled in. Settled into my new house with the perfect numerology in its address and the near-perfect Feng Shui inside. My gorgeous house in the Hollywood Hills with the view to die for and the private hiking trails. My house with the bonus room and the two-car garage and the possibilities for even more expansion in the future (in my plans are a new kitchen inside and a deck with jacuzzi outside!).

Last week I found the perfect tenant for my beautiful, nature-abundant, fantastic view-having guest house. Lee is the owner of a chain of juice bars -- you know, the ones in the health clubs and gyms? He's a young guy from Seattle and he's just relocated himself and his company here to Los Angeles, and he came to see and fell in love with my guest house. He loved the view and he loved the hiking trails... and he moved a few days ago.

The funny thing is I am a "juicer" from way back. I started juicing (drinking fresh-pressed juices for health) and juice-cleansing (using juices as part of a purifying and cleansing regime) about seven years ago. I am on my third juicer, and am always interested in new juice recipes and information. And Lee is my male counterpart, but he's actually made a career out of it.

Turns out, Lee started out as the "Blender Boy" and became well-known in his area for showing everyone how to use their juicers. Then he branched out and found the perfect niche for his talent. He now has nearly a hundred stores across this country, and even has stores in Taiwan!!!

So once we both get more settled, we are gonna do some juicing together!

On my home front, now that the floors are in and the boxes delivered (what wasn't lost or stolen from among them), I am just beginning the long but fun process of decorating my new home. I get to put zillions of nails up in my newly painted walls, arrange and rearrange furniture until it is just right, and somehow manage to make my office into a viable workspace.

But just when I was getting into my new project, here it is -- late-November. Which, in the United States, means only one thing..... Thanksgiving!

When I originally got my air ticket TO LA from Philadelphia, I arranged my return for the 17th of November for three reasons: Thanksgiving is on the 23rd; my parents are moving out of the house and I wanted to help out; and, my cousin Andrew's Bar Mitzvah is on the 18th.

I have devoted the entire next column to the Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish coming of age ritual, so I won't go into that here. But despite the fun of Thanksgiving and the Bar Mitzvah, the real reason I came home was to help out my parents. After 25 years in the same place, they finally decided to sell the family home. Luckily, it didn't take long for them to find a buyer -- actually the owner of the local auto body shop where my brother and I get our cars repaired! It's ironic, too, that exactly when I was in the process of buying my home, my parents were in the process of selling theirs.

Since getting older, my parents have taken to flying south for the winter, and a few years ago bought a small condo in Florida in the same building as my Uncle Jerry and his wife. So every year they leave the cold of Philadelphia by November, not to return until April or May. This year was no different in substance, although once they left, they knew they would never be coming back to this exact house.

When I got home on November 17th, I went right to work, helping them box up the things they were putting into storage, and the things they were sending down to Florida. And they have a LOT of things! We worked before and after the Bar Mitzvah; we worked before and after Thanksgiving; and we all postponed our flights and are still working as of this writing (November 29th). And it doesn't look like it will all be done by my parent's flight time tomorrow at noon, either.

So I have already gone and postponed my flight yet again! And sometime late tonight, I have a funny feeling my parents are going to do the same.

帰郷

新しいわが家のリビングルーム

なんだかんだありましたが、ようやく腰を落ち着けた私。新しい住所は、数霊術（誕生日や名前の字数なんかで判断する占い）でみるとどうやら最高の場所らしいんですよ。風水によると、間取りもほぼ完璧みたいだし。場所は念願のハリウッドヒルズで、景色は超最高だし、プライベートのハイキングコースも付いてて。ボーナスルームもあって、ガレージも２台分あって、将来的には増築も可能（そのうち、新しいキッチンと、ジャグジー付きのデッキを作る予定）。これが私の新しいお家です！

わが家のゲストハウスは、自然に囲まれた、眺望抜群の素晴らしいお部屋。この部屋の間借り人が先週見つかりました。彼の名前はリー。リーはジュースバー（スポーツクラブやジムによくあるでしょ？）のチェーン店のオーナーです。とはいっても、年はまだまだ若いんですよ。シアトル出身の彼は、会社とともにロサンゼルスに引っ越してきたばかり。リーは、私のゲストハウスを見た途端、一目惚れしちゃったんですって。景色もハイキングコースもすっごく気に入ったみたい。その彼が、数日前に引っ越してきたんです。

不思議なことに、私も前から「ジュース好き」なんですよねー。７年ほど前から、ジューシング（健康のためにフレッシュジュースを飲むこと）やジュースクレンジング（体内を浄化するための食生活にジュースを取り入れること）を続けてるんですよ。ジューサーはもう３台目。新しいジュースのレシピや情報にはいつも目を光らせているんです。男女の違いはあれど、リーもその辺は私によく似てるんですよね。彼の場合、それを仕事にしてるんだからすごいです。

「ブレンダーボーイ」として知られている彼は、地元の人たちにジューサーの使い方を教えているうちにどんどん有名になっていったんだって。そのうち支店まで出すようになり、自分の才能を活かせる仕事はこれだと思ったみたい。今ではアメリカ中に100店を数えるまでに。台湾にも何件かお店があるんですって。もう少し落ち着いたら、２人でジューシングを楽しもうと思ってます。

わが家の床の張り替えも終わり、荷物もようやく到着しました（中にはなくなったり盗られたりした荷物もありましたが・・・）。今は新しい家の飾りつけに取りかかってるところなんですよ。時間はかかるけど、これが楽しいんですよねー。新しく塗り替えた壁に数え切れないほどの釘を打ち付け、家具をあっちに動かしたりこっちに動かしたりして置き場所を決め、そしてなんとか仕事ができるスペースをつくりあげていこうってわけです。

でもね、この新しいプロジェクトに取りかかったのは11月の終わりのことだったんです。何があるのかって？　アメリカで11月の終わりといえば、思いつくのはひとつだけ・・・そう、サンクスギビングの日がやってくるのです！

11月17日の飛行機でフィラデルフィアに帰ることにした理由は３つ。１）23日がサンクスギビングだから。２）両親が引越しをするので、それを手伝いたいから。３）いとこのアンドリューの「Bar Mitzvah」が18日にあるから。

「Bar Mitzvah」はユダヤ教の成人式のことなんだけど、この話は次回のコラムでたっぷりお話することにして、話を元に戻しましょう。サンクスギビング・ディとBar Mitzvahを楽しみにしてたのはもちろんなんだけど、フィラデルフィアに戻ったホントの理由は両親の手伝いをしたかったから。両親が、25年間住み続けた家をとうとう売る決心をしたんです。幸い、すぐに買い手が見つかりました（なんと、私や私の兄弟が車の修理をしてもらった、近所の自動車修理工場のオーナーが買い手だったんです）。私が自分の家を買おうとしているときに、私の両親が自分たちの家を売ろうとしてたなんて、なんか皮肉な話ですよね。

私の両親もだんだん年をとってきて、冬の間は南の方へ出かけるようになり、何年か前にはフロリダにマンションまで買っちゃったんです（同じマンションには、叔父のジェリーとその奥さんも住んでいます）。だから、毎年11月になるとフィラデルフィアの寒さから逃れて南へ向かい、４月か５月まで帰ってこない。今年もそうなる予定だったんですよね、ほんとは。でも、いざフィラデルフィアを離れてみると、もう自分たちはこの家に帰ってこないだろうなって思ったらしいんです。

11月17日、実家に到着した私は、早速両親の手伝いを開始。これから倉庫に押し込む荷物や、フロリダに送る荷物をどんどん箱に詰めていくんだけど、まあ荷物の多いこと！　Bar Mitzvahの前後も荷作り、サンクスギビング・ディの前後も荷作り、結局私も両親も出発を延期して荷作り、荷作り、荷作り・・・。このダイアリーを書いている11月29日現在、まだまだ荷作りは終わっていません。両親が乗る飛行機は明日の正午発。どう考えても、それまでに終わりそうにないよなあ。

というわけで、私のフライトはまたまた延期！　今夜遅くには、私の両親も同じように延期する羽目になるんだろうなあ。想像すると笑っちゃう！
