| My Dream House Last week I finally confessed to you all how I have moved again. But this week, I will explain to you why this is a semi-permanent residence. In other words, I won't be moving for a long time! I bought a house! That's the short version of the story. The more detailed one starts with my intense dissatisfaction living in a small, dark, and very noisy bottom floor of a duplex, in a not-so-safe area of Los Angeles. After just a few days in the first apartment, I knew I had to leave. But I didn't know where to go. I did know, however, that I wanted to stay in the Hollywood Hills, but preferably somewhere further up in the Hill, for safety as well as aesthetic reasons. So, one day I got in my trusty Nissan (of course I have a Japanese car!) and drove around and around the Hollywood Hills, mainly staying in a sub-area of the Hills as Laurel Canyon. I have an acquaintance who lives there, and love their house, so I thought that would be a good place to start. I drove and drove and explored Laurel Canyon, pencil and paper on the passenger seat. And whenever I found an interesting-looking house for sale, I would jot down the address and the name of the real estate agency responsible for it. By the end of a few hours, I had a paper full of scribbles, and a head full of ideas. I left the Canyon and pulled into the parking lot of a Subway sandwich shop on Sunset Blvd. and called a realtor. No one answered, so I left a message and moved on. The second agency I called picked up. It was a very friendly-sounding woman on the phone, and I asked her about the property I had seen. She started asking me all sorts of questions about what I was looking for and what my budget was, and we soon decided we should meet in person and talk. Turns out her office was about two blocks away! So I drove around the corner, parked the car, and went inside Fred Sands Hollywood Hills. And there was Kittean. Tall, beautiful, blonde, and very friendly, Kittean and I immediately hit it off. You have already met her in a previous article, actually. During the process of finding me a house, Kittean and I became quite good friends. From that first day I knew she was someone I could work with, but I wasn't prepared for how successful our relationship would turn out to be! Kittean took careful notes of all my parameters, my likes and dislikes, and the areas I wanted to look in. And she started making appointments for me for the very next day. All in all, I saw more than 30 houses, ranging in sizes, shapes, and styles, but mostly located in the Hollywood Hills. We did explore several areas within the Hollywood Hills (which is quite a long stretch of hills and canyons), and with Kittean's guidance and patience, I was able to narrow down much more precisely the area and type of house I wanted. We got close several times. In fact we found one that looked promising the very first day! But it turned out it would need much more work than I was able to put into it. Then we found another absolutely adorable house -- we called it "the dollhouse" 'cause it was so cute! It was actually built by Disney for one of their early films, and the house itself was just perfect. But it was on an extremely noisy street, which constant traffic and buses, and you all know now how sensitive to noise I am! And then we found it -- my Dream House. In fact, it was so perfect that Kittean and I couldn't believe our luck. I will tell you all about it next week! Till then, In the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, Cara Jones |

| 夢の我が家 先週、とうとうみなさんに告白してしまいました。またもや引っ越しするって。今週お話するのは、今度のお家が半永久的に住み続けることになりそうだってこと。言い換えれば、これからずーっと引っ越ししないっていうこと！ 私、家を買っちゃったんです！ 短く言えばそういうことなんだけど、詳しい話はいろいろありまして。お話は、不満だらけのあのデュプレックスから始まります。そう、小さくて暗くて騒音の激しい、そのうえとても安全とは言えない地域にある、あのデュプレックスの１階の部屋。あの部屋に引っ越して数日目にはすでに「引っ越さなきゃいけないな」と思ってたんだけど、どこに引っ越していいのかわからない。でも、とにかくハリウッド・ヒルズには住みたかったんですよね。できれば、丘のもっと上の方に。景色がいいのももちろんだけど、安全を考えてもその方がいいと思って。 ある日、私は車に乗って（車はニッサン。もちろん日本車ですよ！ とっても頼りになるヤツです）ハリウッド・ヒルズ中を走り回りました。特に重点的に回ったのは、ローレル・キャニオンあたりのハリウッド・ヒルズの近郊。その辺りに住んでる知り合いがいて、その人のお家がすごくステキなんです。だから、家探しを始めるならここしかないって感じで。 車に乗った私は、ローレル・キャニオンの隅から隅まで走り回りました。助手席には鉛筆と紙を置いて。途中、売り出し中の気に入った物件があれば、かたっぱしからそこの住所と不動産屋の名前を書きとめていきました。２〜３時間が過ぎた頃には、紙は走り書きでいっぱい。頭の中にもアイデアがいっぱい！ キャニオンを後にした私は、サンセット通 りにあるサンドウィッチショップ「サブウェイ」に車を止めました。そこから１軒の不動産屋さんに電話をかけたんだけど誰も出ない。とりあえずメッセージを残しておいて、次の不動産屋に電話をかけてみることに。２軒目の不動産屋さんは電話が繋がりました。電話に出たのはとてもフレンドリーな感じの女性で、私は今見てきたばかりの物件について尋ねてみました。彼女は、私がどんな物件を探しているのか、予算はどれくらいかなんてことを質問してきたんだけど、結局すぐにでも会って話をしようということになったんです。だって、彼女のオフィスは私がいた場所からたった２ブロックしか離れてなかったんですよ！ 角をまがればすぐそこがオフィス。私は車を止めて、「フレッド・サンズ・ハリウッド・ヒルズ」という彼女のオフィスに入っていきました。 そこにいたのが、キテアン。キテアンは背がすらっと高く、髪はブロンドで、とっても美人で、とっても親切な女性でした。私はすぐに彼女のことが好きになりました。キテアンのことは前にもお話したことがありますよね。家探しを手伝ってもらってるうちに、キテアンと私はとってもいい友達になっていったんです。初めて会った日から彼女とはうまくやっていけると思ってたけど、まさかこんなにすばらしい友達になれるとは！ キテアンは、私が出す条件や、好き嫌い、住みたいと思ってる地域なんかをこと細かに書き留めていきました。そして翌日にはさっそく家を見に行く約束を取り付けてくれたんです。最終的に私が見に行った家は30軒以上。サイズも形もスタイルもそれぞれ違った家ばかりだったけど、そのほとんどがハリウッド・ヒルズにある物件。ハリウッド・ヒルズの中でも、何カ所か違った地域も探してみました（ハリウッド・ヒルズは丘あり渓谷ありの縦にながーい地域なんです）。キテアンはとても辛抱強く、いろんな物件を紹介してくれました。そのおかげで私は自分がどんな家に住みたいのか、どの地域に住みたいのか、もっと絞り込んでいくことができたんです。 私の希望に近い家も何軒かあったんです。初日にも結構いい物件があったんですよ。でも、手直しにお金がかかり過ぎるということで断念。次に見つけたのは超かわいいお家で、私たちはその家を「ドールハウス」と名づけました。もう、ホントにキュートなんですよ！ この家を建てたのは、なんとあのディズニー。初期の頃の映画のために建てられたとかで、もうすべてが完璧。でも表の通 りがすっごくうるさかったんですよね。車やバスがひっきりなしに走ってて。私がどれだけ騒音に敏感になってるか、皆さんご存知でしょ！ そしてついに見つけたんです、私の夢のお家を。私もキテアンも信じられないくらい、ホーントに理想通 りの家なんです。 続きは次回のダイアリーで。 それでは。 Ｌ.
