The Hollywood Bowl

I just got back from my very first trip to the Hollywood Bowl !!! It's funny, my home is just a mile or so away from the famous concert venue, but I had yet to venture through the gates. Tonight would change all that.

Last Thursday I went to my favorite salsa club, the Conga Room, and danced the night away. I danced with my friend Cary, and he invited me to go with him to the 7th Annual Hollywood Salsa and Latin Jazz Festival, and I eagerly accepted. But I had no idea what a crazy, fun, danceable night this would turn out to be.

Cary picked me up at 5:30 at my place and -- even though it was right around the corner -- in true LA style we drove to the Hollywood Bowl. We got a great parking spot, went through the gates, and people-watched as crowds of salsa enthusiasts entered in droves. The Hollywood Bowl has a capacity of just under 18,000 people, and when we got inside the arena, it was obvious that it was at least 3/4 filled.

I can't believe I have never been inside this historic landmark, which has been used continuously since it was built in 1922. Recently, they have begun renovating the shell that covers the stage of the Bowl into a more acoustically-advantageous design. I did some research...

The current shell at the Hollywood Bowl is actually the fourth shell in its history. The first three varied in shape and design, and included a wooden ellipse in 1926, a pyramid-shaped shell in 1927, and an elliptical shape with concentric arches in 1928. Lloyd Wright, the oldest son of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the shells for the Bowl in 1927 and 1928 , the second of which provided the inspiration for the current shell, which was erected in 1929. It is hard to believe that this structure is over 70 years old!

The proposed new shell, which will replace the current one, will maintain the nine concentric arches that everyone associates with the Hollywood Bowl, but will (hopefully) have better acoustics.

Of course, it is the incomparable performances that have made the Hollywood Bowl's history unique. Such legendary artists as Frank Sinatra, Pavarotti, Barbra Streisand, and Stravinsky have appeared at the Bowl throughout the years. So have the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Nat "King" Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Elton John. Baryshnikov and Nureyev have danced there. So has Fred Astaire.

Tonight, there was an amazing lineup of salsa and Latin jazz bands, ranging from the frenetically energetic, danceable ones, to the romantic, jazzier one. People dances in the aisles, and Cary and I were no exception. Later in the evening, son of the late Tito Puente came on with the Tito Puente Orchestra and we really started to shake our groove things! Sheila E. did a cameo number which was incredible, as did several members of the Buena Vista Social club.

By the last hour of the four hour festival, everyone was going nuts. Cary and I danced up and down the aisles 'til our feet hurt, but neither of us wanted to stop. In fact, just between you and me, I was very disappointed when it ended. I could have danced all night!!!

So my first trip to the Hollywood Bowl was quite a memorable one, and I can't wait to go there again. It's so close to home --- I should go every week!

たった今ハリウッド・ボウルから戻ってまいりました！　ハリウッド・ボウルに行ったのは、実は今回が初めて。この有名な野外コンサート会場からわが家まではたったの１マイルしか離れてないというのに、今まで門さえくぐったことがなかったなんて、不思議なくらいですよね。でも、これからはヤミツキになりそう・・・。

お気に入りのサルサクラブ「コンガ・ルーム」で一晩中踊り明かしたのは、先週の木曜日のこと。そのとき一緒に踊ってた友達のケイリーが、「ハリウッド・サルサ・アンド・ラテン・ジャズ・フェスティバルに行こう」って誘ってくれたんです。このフェスティバルは毎年恒例で、今回が７回目なんだって。私はイチもニもなくＯＫしました。でもね、まさかこんなにクレイジーで、楽しくって、ノリノリの夜になるなんて思ってもいなかった私・・・。

夕方５時半、ケイリーが迎えにやってきました。そのまま彼の車に乗ってハリウッド・ボウルへ。こーんなにご近所なのに車で行っちゃうっていうのが、まさしくＬ.Ａ.スタイルでしょ。門のすぐ近くにあるとても便利な駐車場に車を止めて、いざ中へ。サルサ・ファンらしき人たちがぞろぞろと中に入っていきました。ハリウッド・ボウルの収容人数はおよそ18,000人。私たちがアリーナに着いた頃には、席の3/4がすでに埋まっていました。

ハリウッド・ボウルが建てられたのは1922年。それ以来、今日までずっと活躍してきた歴史ある建物なんです。こんなすばらしいところに今まで来たことがなかったなんて！　最近、ステージを覆う屋根の部分の改築工事が始まったそうです。より音響効果の高いデザインに変わるんですって。さらに詳しい情報を少し・・・。

現在ある屋根は、この建物ができてから４代目なのだそうです。1926年にできた１代目は木製で楕円形、1927年の２代目はピラミッド型、そして1928年の３代目は同心円のアーチが重なった楕円形と、３代それぞれが違った形・デザインをしていました。1927年と1928年の改築の際には、フランク・ロイド・ライトの長男、ロイド・ライトがデザインを担当したそうです。そして1928年のデザインがインスピレーションを与えて、1929年に今の屋根が完成。この建物が70年以上も前に建てられたなんて、ホント信じられない！

ハリウッド・ボウルと聞いて誰もが連想するのは、９つの同心円状のアーチ。現在計画されている新しい屋根にもこのデザインは受け継がれるとか。音響効果も今より良くなるハズ!?

ハリウッド・ボウルの歴史の中で、忘れちゃならないのが素晴らしいコンサートの数々。フランク・シナトラやパバロッティ、バーブラ・ストライザンド、ストラビンスキーなど伝説的なアーティストたちがこのハリウッド・ボウルに登場しています。ほかにも、ビートルズ、サイモン＆ガーファンクル、ナット・キング・コール、エラ・フィッツジェラルド、ビリー・ホリデイ、エルトン・ジョンなどなど。バリシニコフやヌレエフもここで踊ったんですよ。そうそう、フレッド・アステアもね。

今夜登場したサルサ＆ラテン・ジャズのバンドも豪華ラインナップ。超エネルギッシュでダンサブルなバンドあり、ロマンティックでジャズっぽいバンドあり。通路で踊りだす人も続出でした。もちろんケイリーと私もね！　夜も更けた頃、故ティト・プエンテの息子がティト・プエンテ・オーケストラと共に登場し、会場の盛り上がりは最高潮に。シーラＥやブエナ・ビスタ・ソシアル・クラブのメンバーも数人登場し、すばらしいカメオ・ナンバーを演奏してくれました。

４時間のフェスティバルも終わりに近づき、もうみんな盛り上がりまくり！　ケイリーと私は通路中を行ったり来たりで足が痛くなるほど。「それでもずーっと踊ってたい!!!」って感じで。ここだけの話、フェスティバルが終わるのがすごく悲しかったくらい。一晩中でも踊り続けたかったよおー！

とにかく、ハリウッド・ボウル初体験は最高の思い出となりました。次回が待ちきれないくらい。だってこんなに近所なんだもん、週に１度はハリウッド・ボウルって感じ!?
