Coincidence or Master Plan? I have already told
you how in June I suddenly, rather impetuously decided to move to
Los Angeles , even though I had just put a deposit down on a new
apartment in Philadelphia. Well, it turns out unbeknownst to me,
someone else in my life was making the very same impetuous decision.
The concert was great. Erin is a strikingly beautiful petite blonde, with a voice that could blow you away. She also plays piano, and put together a great band featuring her husband Peter on guitar, a bass player, drummer, and cellist. After the concert, we all went out together and Erin and I got to talk and get to know each other. We also made a date to have coffee sometime soon, and started to become friends. Then, last December, Yoshi invited Peter Gallway and Larry John McNally, and Erin to Japan to do a concert at Tokyo's On Air West, and I was there. It was a great show, and Erin and I cemented our friendship by meeting again and spending time together in a "foreign land". But for some reason (probably because we were both really busy) we didn't see each other much in New York. Then, the summer came, and I had made my big decision to move to LA, but hadn't told anyone yet. Once day, I was in the studio putting the finishing touches on my new album when an email came in for me. It was an announcement. From Erin and Peter. They announced to all their friends in a mass email that they had made the sudden decision to move to Los Angeles!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got that email, and could not believe it. In fact, I had written a similar mass mailing for my friends to break the news, but hadn't sent it yet. So I immediately wrote Erin back describing my surprise, and telling her about my big decision. Turns out, we were moving to LA only a few weeks apart! Well, I cannot tell you how happy we both were to find out that we would already have a friend in this new city we were just moving to. How lucky could we get? So, I arrived in LA first, while Erin and Peter drove their belongings cross country in a rented truck. But they called as soon as they got into town, and Erin and I got together immediately! That was over a month ago, and we have been buddies ever since. As I mentioned in my last column, I invited Erin and Peter, along with Peter's friend Jon Lind, to join Irene and me for our night at Largo. Since, Erin and I have gone hiking, shopping, brainstorming, and lunching together. She has made my transition to this new city so much more smooth and enjoyable, and I hope I have done the same for her. In addition, her husband Peter and I have gotten to know each other more. In fact, we are even planning on working together in the near future. So: coincidence, or part of the master plan? I think it must be the latter, cause this feels like it was meant to be. 偶然か？ はたまた運命か？ ＬＡに引っ越そうと決めたのは６月のこと。その決心が、衝動的ともいえるほど突然だったことは以前にもお話したとおりです。フィラデルフィアの新しいアパートメントに手付金まで払ってたのにねー。それはさておき、私の知らないところで、ある人がある決心をしていたことがわかったんです。私と同じく、衝動的な大決心を・・・。
エリンと出会えたのは、ある日本人の友達のおかげなんですよ。彼の名前はヨシ。コンサートのプロモーターやレコードのプロデューサーとして、主にフォークの世界で活躍しています。彼は、ミュージシャンでプロデューサーのピーター・ゴールウェイとも親しく、日本でピーターのアルバムを出したりしています。去年の夏、そのヨシがニューヨークに遊びにきました。私はヨシに誘われて、あるコンサートに行くことに。出演するのはピーターの奥さん、エリン。場所はグリーンウィッチ・ヴィレッジのCBGBギャラリーでした。ヨシとは会場で待ち合わせたんだけど、エリンやピーター、それにバンドの他のメンバーもちょうど同じ頃に会場入り。で、ヨシがメンバー全員に私を紹介してくれたんです。ピーターとエリンは半年ほど前に結婚したばかりで、ヨシも結婚式に出席したんだって。 コンサートは最高でした。エリンは小柄でブロンドで超美人！ 歌声もすばらしく、やられたーって感じです。ギター（ダンナさまのピーターです）、ベース、ドラム、チェロ、そしてピアノのエリンで構成されたこのバンドはホーント最高なんですよ！ コンサートも終わり、私とヨシも打ち上げに参加。エリンと私はお互いのことをいろいろ話し合って、すっかり意気投合。コンサートの数日後には、さっそくふたりでお茶を飲みに行くことに。こうして、エリンと私の友達づきあいが始まったのでした。 そして去年の11月、エリンが日本にやってきました。ヨシの誘いで、ピーター・ゴールウェイ、ラリー・ジョン・マクナリーと共に東京のオン・エア・ウェストでコンサートを開くことになったんです。いやー、このコンサートも最高でしたねー。このとき、エリンとの距離もますます近づいたような気がしたんですよね。「異国の地」で再会し、共通の時間を過ごしたことが友情を深めたんじゃないかなあ。でもね、ニューヨークではあまり会う機会がなかったんですよ、実は（いろいろ理由はありますが・・・ま、お互いに忙しいしねえ）。そうこうしてる間に季節は夏になり、私はＬ.Ａ.に引っ越すという一大決心をしちゃうわけです（まだ誰にも言ってなかったけど）。そんなある日、新しいアルバムを仕上げるためスタジオに入っていた私に１通のメールが・・・。 「お知らせ エリン＆ピーターより」。ふたりが、友達みんなに宛てたメールでした。「突然ですが、引っ越すことになりました。」な、なに、引っ越しだって!？「引っ越し先はロサンゼルスです」え、ええーっっっっっ、ロサンゼルス!! メールを読んだ私はしばし呆然・・・しんじらんなーい！ だって、私も同じようなメールを書いたばかりだったんですよー（まだ送信していなかったけど）。私はすぐにエリンに返事を出しました。私がどれほど驚いたかを知らせようと思って。それと、私の一大決心を知らせるためにね。後でわかったんだけど、私と彼女の引っ越しはたった数週間違いだったんですよ！ このことを知って、私もエリンも超ハッピー！ だって、引っ越し先の見知らぬ町に、もう既に友達がいるってわかってるんですよ！ ラッキーだと思いません？ Ｌ.Ａ.に先に着いたのは私。その頃エリンとピーターは、レンタルのトラックに荷物を積み込んでアメリカ大陸を横断中。ふたりはＬ.Ａ.に着くやいなや電話をくれて、私はすぐに会いに行きました！ あれから１カ月、私たちはとっても仲良くやってます。そうそう、先週ラルゴのフライデーナイトについてお話しましたよね。あの時も、アイリーンのほかに、エリンとピーター、それにピーターの友達のジョン・リンドも誘って行ったんですよ。 Ｌ.Ａ.に引っ越してから、エリンとはしょっちゅう一緒に出かけています。ハイキングにショッピング、なんだかんだ話しあったり、ランチを食べにいったり。こんなにスムーズに、こんなに楽しく引っ越しできたのは、ほんと彼女のおかげです。彼女も同じように感じてくれていたらいいな。最近ではピーターとも仲良くなってきて、近々一緒に仕事をしようなんて話も出てるんですよ。 これってただの偶然なのかな、それとも神サマが仕組んだこと？ 私は後者だと思ってるんです。だって話がデキすぎでしょ！ ロサンゼルスにて キャラ・ジョーンズ 翻訳：山本なむを
