Jon Brion at Largo

As I started to tell you all last week, music fans all over the country know about Friday nights at Largo, and I had been wanting to catch a show ever since I first heard about it. A few days after I arrived in LA, my friend Ken took me to see a Buster Keaton movie at the Silent Movie Theatre on Fairfax Avenue. After the movie we took a walk down Fairfax, and passed by Largo. I hadn't known the club was right there so, all excited, I convinced Ken to pop in with me!

The place was packed, but somehow we found a table of 4 that was only occupied by two people, and they invited us to join them. Jon made his appearance on stage right around 11pm, and he looked more like Paul McCartney than the Jon Brion I had seen in Boston ten years earlier, but as soon as he started playing, I recognized him immediately.

He started out solo, on the piano, and played parodic versions of famous songs, interspersed with a few of his own creations. Then he became a one-man band, using a "Jam Box" to record riffs on the guitar and chords on the piano and, most interestingly, percussive hits of random objects on the stage, and before you know what was happening, he was singing along to an entire band, all instruments played by himself.

That was a blast to watch, and quite impressive to hear. But the best part was yet to come.

Because Jon has become such a phenomenon in LA, and mostly due to the fact that he has worked with some of the best musicians in town, the audience is always peppered with his famous, talented friends. You hear stories about "guest appearances" by Beck, and Aimee Mann, and of course, Fiona Apple. So we were all looking forward to seeing who would join Jon on stage tonight.

His first famous friend was someone you would never recognize by his face, but guaranteed you own records he has played on in your collection. One of my favorite musicians, pianist Benmont Tench, got up and joined Jon about halfway through the set. A little later, they were joined by a drummer, and then after a few songs Jon said "Don? I hear you're out there in the audience. If you are, come on up!" And everyone craned their necks to see which 'Don' was being invited on stage.

A few minutes later, there was no question. Don Was, of the band Was, Not Was, also an acclaimed producer in his own right (Bonnie Raitt and more) got up on stage and grabbed a bass and strapped it on.

I was thrilled.

The rest of the night was like a dream. It was funny and brilliant and exciting all at the same time. Jon would ask for requests, and the whole audience would call out their favorite cheesy disco numbers or one hit wonders of the 70s and 80s for Jon to re-invent for us with his amazing band.

Ken and I left Largo completely sated. Yet not even a week had passed before I was on the phone making reservations for me and Irene on August 25th. If you make reservations for dinner there well ahead of time, you are guaranteed a table for the show. So I made reservations for four, assuming we would ask some friends. We ended up going with musician and friend Peter Gallway, his wife (and my buddy) Erin Kamler, and songwriter Jon Lind (who wrote "Save the Best for Last", by Vanessa Williams and "Crazy For You" by Madonna).

Although that second time we went there weren't any famous guests to speak of, it was still a great show, and I would whole-heartedly recommend to any music lover visiting Los Angeles to check out Jon Brion at Largo any Friday night.

ジョン・ブライオンを聴きにラルゴへ

アメリカの音楽ファンなら誰もが知っているラルゴのフライデーナイト。先週、少しお話しましたよね。初めてその話を聞いたときからもうずーっと行きたくて行きたくて。そんな私がＬ.Ａ.に引っ越してきて数日後、友達のケンがバスター・キートンの映画に連れてってくれたんです。場所はフェアファックス・アベニューのサイレント・ムービー・シアター。映画の後、通りを歩いているとなんとラルゴ発見！　こんなところにあるなんて知らなかった私は超エキサイトしちゃって、ケンを引っ張るようにして店の中へ・・・。

店の中は超満員。４人がけのテーブルに座ってた２人連れが「ここへどうぞ」って声をかけてくれて、なんとか座ることができました。11時ちょうど、ジョンがステージに登場。私が10年前にボストンで見たジョンとは、ぜーんぜん別人のように見えました。どっちかって言うとポール・マッカートニーみたいな・・・でも演奏が始まってみれば、やっぱりあのときと変わらないジョンでした！

まずはピアノのソロでスタート。有名な歌をジョン流にアレンジした曲や、彼のオリジナルの曲が次々と演奏されました。ピアノの演奏が終わると、ジョンはなんと「ひとりバンド」に変身。「ジャム・ボックス」を使ってギターのリフやピアノのコード、はたまたステージ上のいろんなものを叩いた音なんかを録音し、その演奏にのって歌い出したんです！　まさに、たったひとりのバンドでしょ？

あれはホント見ものでしたよー。演奏もすっごく良かったし。でもね、ホントの盛り上がりはまだまだこれから・・・。

Ｌ.Ａ.では超有名人となったジョン。彼は、最高のミュージシャンたちと共演していることでも有名なんです。だから彼のライブにはいつも有名ミュージシャンが登場したりして、お客さんを「あっ」と言わせてくれるんです。ベックやエイミー・マン、そしてあのフィオナ・アップルなんかがジョンのライブに「友情出演」してるって話は有名ですよね。だから私たちもその夜のステージのゲストにはすっごく期待してたんです。

最初に登場したゲストについては、みんな顔は知らないかもしれないな。でも、彼が参加したレコードはみんな絶対１枚は持ってるはず。それは私が大好きなミュージシャン、ピアニストのベンモント・テンチ。彼は立ち上がり、曲の途中でジョンの演奏に参加。それから少しして、ドラマーのケビン・マコーネルも登場。何曲かが終わった後、ジョンが客席に向かって話しかけました。「ドン、そこにいるんだろ？　わかってるよ。あがってこいよ！」。観客全員が「どのドン？」って感じで客席を見回しました。

数分後・・・「どのドン？」どころではありません！　あの「ワズ・ノット・ワズ」のドン・ワズではありませんか！　もともとはボニー・ライットなどのプロデューサーとして有名なあのドン・ワズです。彼はステージに上がり、ベースを肩にかけ演奏を始めました。もう、大大大興奮でしたよ！

それから後は、もうなんだか夢をみているよう。おもしろくて、素晴らしくてエキサイティングで。「何かリクエストは？」いつものジョンの呼びかけに、観客はお気に入りのディスコ・ナンバーや'70年代、'80年代のヒット曲をリクエスト。ジョンがそのすばらしいバンドで演奏すると、まるで新しい曲のように生まれかわるんだからスゴイですよね。

ラルゴを後にしたケンと私はすっかり大満足。１週間もたたないうちに、またもや予約の電話を入れてしまいました。今度は８月25日、アイリーンを誘おうと思って。ライブの前にディナーの予約を入れればライブのときにはテーブル席に座れるというので、４人の席を予約しました。他の友達も誘うつもりでね。結局、ミュージシャンのピーター・ギャルウェイと、その奥さんエリン・カムラー（私の友達でもあります）、作曲家のジョン・リンド（バネッサ・ウィリアムズの「セイブ・ザ・ベスト・フォー・ラスト」やマドンナの「クレイジー・フォー・ユー」が有名）も誘って行くことになりました。

２回目のラルゴでは、残念ながら有名なゲストは誰もいませんでした。それでもライブは最高でしたねー。ロサンゼルスに来る音楽ファンのみなさま、ラルゴのフライデーナイトは要チェックですぞ。ホントにホントにホントーにオススメします！
