Celebrity Sightings
People come to LA for the sun, the mountains, the
film studios.... but most of all tourists come to Los Angeles to
see celebrities.
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of tour companies providing sightseeing
tours of celebrity homes, celebrity hangouts, film studios and the
like. In every gift shop along Hollywood Boulevard, you can find
a bewildering array of guidebooks that claim to tell all who pop
for the $12.95 cover price the secret haunts of Hollywood stars.
There are books on famous suicide sites; there are books that tell
where stars kiss other stars, and where they go on their secret
rendezvous.
I had been in LA one month before I saw my first bona fide "celebrity",
and that was mid-August when Scott was visiting and we saw 21 Jump
Street's Dustin Nguyen on the way out of Hugo's restaurant.
Since then, I have seen -- or been close to seeing -- a few
more.

Cara & Irene |
When my friend Irene was visiting in late August, we spent one
day window shopping along the ritzy and very expensive Sunset Plaza
area on Sunset Boulevard. We had lunch at Chin Chin's (I told her
what it meant in Japanese!), we tried on some ridiculously expensive
clothes next door, and as we worked our way down the block, a store
front caught Ireneユs eye. It was a hair salon called Yuki (again,
owned and operated by the Japanese hair stylist of the same name)
and Irene wanted to go in to look. We did, and were immediately overwhelmed
by the strange combination of the fragrant smell of fresh flowers
mixed with hair products and incense. We liked it immediately, and
Irene decided to have a pedicure then and there. I actually left to
do some shopping, but when I met up with her again, her face was all
flushed and she was very excited. Turns out she had just watched Peter
Fonda getting his hair cut by Yuki right next to where she was getting
her toenails painted. She said he looked great in person, and that
Yuki was a fantastic stylist, too! I ended up making an appointment
at that salon and getting my hair cut the next week, but unfortunately
didn't get to see any celebrities.
My next celebrity encounter was a week or so later. My
friend Kittean invited me to go for drinks at the Standard, a trendy
hotel with a cool lobby bar that boasts a terrific view of the city.
We arrived at dusk, and I couldn't be more happy to be in LA than
at that moment, as the sun set over the city and the street lights
were just starting to twinkle on. We met several more friends and
drank for an hour or two, and as we were leaving, we stopped by the
hotel desk to have our parking validated. I was there for just a few
minutes before I realized I was standing right next to actor and comedian
Rob Schneider! The Robster, the Robmonster, the Roberrific! My first
real brush with greatness in LA! Up close and personal, so to speak
(I mean, I saw who he was checking into the hotel with!!!) It was
an interesting end to the evening. And funny, too, because it wasn't
until Irene came to visit that I realized I hadn't yet had my own
celebrity sighting. But the fact of the matter is, I am NOT a "mi-ha"
person at all, and rarely even pay attention to who might be around
at the time. I have surely been in the same place as many celebs during
my month here -- I just haven't noticed!
One person I did notice, though, was songwriter Jon Lind. You may
know some of his creations: Madonna's "Crazy For You", or maybe Vanessa
Williams' "Save The Best For Last". I had dinner with him and some
friends at a wonderful club called Largo recently, and that will be
the subject of the next column.
