Cosmopolitans and French Martinis

Although I am not a heavy drinker by anyone's standards - Japanese or American, I do truly love my bevvies, as they say in Ireland! And recently, my repertoire has broadened...

There is a very popular TV show here in the States which I don't think has made it yet to Japan, called "Sex and the City". "Sex and the City" is told from the perspective of a thirty-something newspaper column writer named Carrie Bradshaw, and it is all about being female and single in New York. It is incredibly popular amongst single women everywhere in the US, but for single women in the big cities, it is like our own lives are being shown on television. Most of us can relate to most of what goes on in the half-hour episodes, and many of us even pick up a thing or two that maybe our girlfriends haven't gotten around to telling us.

One thing I picked up -- the drink, the Cosmopolitan. All four of the women featured in "Sex and the City" drink "Cosmopolitans'" like water. Many of us featured in the real world had never tried one before. I, for one, found the pink color a little off-putting and the name a little pretentious, so I made it through till recently having no idea whatsoever what they tasted like. But that was all to change.

Unfortunately, when I next ordered a Cosmo at a different restaurant, it was much heavier and nowhere near as good. So from then on I have stuck to my unusual, incorruptible, extra dry Vodka martini with olives. If I specify the brand of Vodka (which I always do), there's no way they can mess it up!

However, after several weeks of sticking to the safe Martini, I found myself out with Kittean and her friend Mimi one night. Mimi is originally from Iran, and is now a realtor in Kittean's office. She is a very elegant and beautiful woman, with exquisite taste and style. So, when she ordered a "French Martini", I was surprised and intrigued at the same time. I had never heard of a French Martini, let alone tasted one!

I waited to order until I got to try hers. When it arrived, I was surprised at how it looked -- it was taupe in color, and creamy looking, with a little bit of froth at the top. Not at all what I would expect from anything claiming to be a Martini. But I tried it anyway, and it was delicious! I quickly ordered one for myself and savored every drop.

Unfortunately, I'm still not sure what's in it, but it was an experience to be repeated. (They probably told me at the time, but after one of those Martinis, I'll be damned if I remember! I will try to find out and report back in a future column.)

コスモポリタンとフレンチマティーニ

決して私は大酒のみではありません。日本人の標準からしても、アメリカ人の標準からしても。ただ、お酒が大好きなだけなんです（アイルランド人がよく言うセリフですね、これは）。最近では、レパートリーも広がってきまして・・・。

今、アメリカであるテレビ番組が大ヒットしてるんです。日本ではまだこんな番組はないと思うんだけど、その名も「セックス＆シティ」。

「セックス＆シティ」は30代の新聞コラムニスト、キャリー・ブラットショーの視点から作られた番組で、ニューヨークのシングル女性がテーマ。アメリカ中のシングル女性（ただし大都市に住む女性に限る）に絶大な人気を誇るこの番組を見ていると、まるで自分自身の人生がテレビに映し出されているみたいなんですよね。30分の番組中に取り上げられる話題はすべての女性たちに共通することだし、他の女友達からは聞けそうもないようなことを教えてくれたりもするし。

その番組で私が知ったことのひとつが「コスモポリタンを飲むこと」。「セックス＆シティ」に出てくる４人の女性はみんなコスモポリタンを飲むんです。まるで水を飲むみたいにね。でも実際、ホントに飲んだことがある人なんてほとんどいないんじゃないかなあ。私としては、あのピンク色がなんだかいやな感じだし、名前もなんかわざとらしいしね。だから最近までどんな味がするかなんて考えたこともなかったんです。ところが最近、そのコスモポリタンに対する見方がすっかり変わっちゃいました。

別のレストランに行ったときにまたコスモポリタンを注文してみたんだけど、このときは濃すぎて全然おいしくなかった。それからというもの、私は自分の定番である超ドライのオリーブ入りウォッカマティーニ以外飲まなくなってたんです。だってウォッカの銘柄さえ指定すれば（私はいつも指定します）、ハズレることがないんだから！

いつものマティーニに戻って数週間がたったある夜、私は友人のキテアンとミミ（キテアンの友達）と一緒に出かけることになりました。イラン出身のミミは現在キテアンの不動産事務所で働いています。とってもエレガントできれいなミミは、センスもスタイルも抜群。だから彼女が「フレンチ・マティーニ」を注文したときは、ちょっと驚きました。と同時に、すっごく興味シンシンになってしまった。だって、フレンチ・マティーニなんて聞いたことも飲んだこともないんだから！

とりあえず味見させてもらおうと、彼女の分が運ばれてくるのを待ちました。やってきたお酒を見てビックリ！　色は茶色っぽいグレーで、見た目はとってもクリーミー。表面にはうすーく泡が浮かんでたりして。マティーニと聞いて想像するものとは大違いなんですよ。とにかく一口飲んでみたんだけど、これがまたおいしーい！　すぐに自分の分も注文して、最後の１滴まで味わいました。

残念ながら、材料がなんなのかまだよくわからないんですよねー。でも、またきっと飲む機会があるでしょう（たぶん、あのときも教えてもらったんだと思うんです。でも、あのマティーニを１杯飲んだ後では、そんなことどうでもよくなっちゃう！）　いつかそれがわかったら、このダイアリーで報告しますね。
