My Best Friend's Wedding

With bride and groom

It was an eventful week, to say the least.

On Tuesday I move across country
On Thursday my birthday bash
On Friday the rehearsal dinner for the wedding

And On Saturday - My Best Friend's Wedding.

The night before the wedding I could tell that Bethany was nervous. But more nervous than the bride, was the MOTHER of the bride! Now, Bethany is "batsu 1" she was married for many years to her college sweetheart, a brilliant classical pianist with whom she moved to Los Angeles years ago. Without whom, it is fair to say, she never would have met her new husband, because she never would have been living in the same city as him. Bethany met Saul on a Sierra Club Singles hike. The Sierra Club hosts hiking events of all types, but one day, independently of each other, both Saul and Bethany decided to try to meet someone with the same love of the outdoors, but going on this particular singles hike. They met; they dated for 8 months; Saul proposed; they got married on July 22nd. On that Saturday, I arrived at the site of the wedding a little bit early for my 4:30 call with the hair stylist. That's because I had been very productive that day getting Band-Aids for the blister on Bethany's foot, buying extra bottled water so the bride wouldn't be thirsty, arranging a special pre-wedding shot of the best Tequila so the bride wouldn't be nervous. All these errands got finished and with time to spare, so I arrived at The Victorian and waited.

The hair stylist, who would also be doing the brides hair and makeup, and the makeup of the mother of the bride, was Chris, the wonderful artist who did my hair-make for the photo shoot last month. I already knew she was good, but even I was surprised at how beautifully she did my hair.

By the time Bethany arrived, I was all ready and able to concentrate on her. We all three had a shot of Tequila and Bethany had her hair and makeup done and looked just gorgeous. When she put on the beautiful, simple yet elegant white gown, I just cried she looked so pretty.

You see, I wasn't at her first wedding, even though we were best friends at the time. She and her first husband had wanted just a simple family ceremony, and no real party, so I wasn't there. But this extravaganza was making up for it!

After we were all gorgeous, it was time for the posed pictures with the photographer. We did some outside and some inside, but the funny thing is I think we were all more nervous for the pictures than for the wedding! We all lined up a few minutes before 8pm (the guests had arrived at 7pm to enjoy a lovely buffet of hors deouvres and cocktails and have time to chat before the ceremony). The processional down the aisle started with the groom and his parents; then the two best men, one by one; then Saul's sister and Bethany's brother; then the maid of honor; then the bride, flanked by her parents.

I was SO nervous walking down the aisle, headed straight for Saul! I was thinking, "NOOO, its not MEEEE!" but I tried not to let it show! As I neared my place until the huppa (the traditional Jewish canopy under which the bride and groom stand when they exchange vows), I heard someone to my right whisper, "She's the singer!"

The ceremony was brief but beautiful. And the recessional when everyone walks back down the aisle in reverse order after the ceremony was much more relaxed and carefree. Then the real fun began! We all went downstairs where a DJ was playing great music. There was alcohol flowing and delicious food being served, but before we got too far into the meal, it was time for the toasts. First best man Jon gave a very funny toast, and then handed the mic to the other best man, Don. (The fact that their names rhymed never got less funny as the wedding weekend went on). Don had written a song, and sang it with his wife. It was a sing-along to the tune of Hava Nagila the words went Sauly and Bethny it was very funny but you probably had to be there!

Then, it was my turn. I got up and made the sappy, sentimental speech about everything happening for a reason. It seemed to go over well, and then we ended with a funny speech from Mark, the photographer. Then, finally, we could eat!

The other big part of the night for me was the song. I had long planned to sing at Bethany's wedding, but I wanted to sing an original song, written just for her. But with the move and everything, I wasn't able to finish it in time. So I brought along the karaoke tracks of my second album, "Pandora's Box", and I intended to sing the Hebrew love song on it called "Yedid Nefesh". I kept on waiting for just the right time, but the right didn't want to come. Finally, at the very end of the evening, when all that was left were the very closest family and friends, the DJ grabbed me and told me I was ON! I got the mic and after a brief introduction/dedication, I sang the song to my best friend in the whole world, and her new husband.

It was the last song of the evening, a lullaby, and the perfect end to a beautiful wedding that I, and many others, will never forget.

今週はとにかくイベントの多い週でした。

　火曜日　アメリカ横断引っ越しの旅
　木曜日　私のバースデイパーティー
　金曜日　結婚式のリハーサル＆ディナー

そしてそして、
　土曜日　わが大親友の結婚式です。

結婚式の前夜、ベサニーはもうすでに緊張している様子。その花嫁本人より緊張している人が約１名・・・それはベサニーのママでした！　ところで、ベサニーはかつて結婚していたことがあり、いわゆる「バツイチ」。お相手は大学時代の恋人で、才能豊かなクラシックのピアニストでした。その彼と一緒にロサンゼルスに引っ越してきたのは数年前のこと。もしも彼と結婚していなかったら、ロサンゼルスに住むこともなかっただろうし、今の彼に出会うこともなかったんでしょうね。

ベサニーと新郎のソールが知り合ったのはシエラ・クラブ主催のシングル向けハイキング。シエラ･クラブ主催の数あるハイキング・イベントの中で、２人が選んだのがまさにこのシングル向けハイキングだったのです。２人ともアウトドアが大好きで、そんな趣味を共有できるような人に出会いたかったんですって。このハイキングで２人は出会い、８カ月の間デートを重ね、やがてソールがプロポーズ。そしてこの日の結婚式を迎えたのです。土曜日の式当日、私とヘアースタイリストのクリスは集合時間の夕方４時半よりも早めに式場に到着しました。その日は朝から大忙し。靴ズレができないようにベサニーの足にバンドエイドを貼ってあげたり、ベサニーのノドがかわいたときのためにミネラルウォーターを買いにいったり、式の前に飲む最高級のテキーラを用意してあげたり（緊張をほぐすため、花嫁は式の前にテキーラを１ショット飲むのが慣わしなのです）・・・。そんなこまごまとした用事もすみ、とりあえず時間があったので、会場となる「ビクトリアン」にやってきたというわけです。

見よ、クリスにセットしてもらったステキなヘアスタイルを！

今回、花嫁のヘアスタイル＆メイクを担当するのはヘアスタイリストのクリス（ついでにママのお化粧も）。先月、私のアルバムジャケット写真撮影のときにもヘアメイクを担当してくれたあのクリスです。私も髪をセットしてもらったんだけど、彼女の腕のよさには改めて驚かされました。すっごく素敵に仕上げてくれたんですよ！

いよいよベサニーが到着。私のほうは準備万端で、あとは彼女のお世話に集中するだけ。まずは３人でテキーラを１ショット飲み、それからベサニーのヘアメイクを始めました。メイクが終わった彼女はまさにゴージャス！　花嫁が着る白いガウンも、シンプルながらとってもエレガント。そのガウンをはおった美しいベサニーの姿を見て、私はただ涙、涙でした。

実は私、彼女の最初の結婚式には出席していないのです。そのときも今みたいな親友ではあったんですよ。でも、ベサニーも花婿も「結婚式はシンプルに家族だけであげたい」って考えてたみたいで、私は招待されなかったんです。ま、今回のパーティーですべて帳消しって感じかな！

全員の準備が整い、カメラマンによる写真撮影の時間になりました。屋外と屋内で数枚ずつ写真を撮ったんだけど、おかしかったのはみんな式よりも写真撮影の方が緊張してたってこと！　夜８時ちょっと前、私たちは１列に整列しました（招待客は７時ごろに到着。オードブル＆カクテルのビュッフェを楽しみながら、おしゃべりしていたようです）。先頭を歩くのは花婿とその両親、その後に２人のベストマン、ソールの妹とベサニーの弟、ブライドメイドの私、そして花嫁と、その両脇に花嫁の両親が続きます。

ソールに向かって通路を歩いていく間、もうどれほど緊張したことか！「花嫁は私じゃなあああああああい！」なあんて思いながら。でも、緊張してるなんてこれっぽっちも表情には出さないけどね！　フッパ（新郎新婦がその下で誓いを交わすユダヤ伝統の天蓋）に近づいていくと、右の方から誰かのささやく声が聞こえました。「ほら、あの歌手の人だ」。

ベストマンのジョン＆ドン

式はあっという間に終わっちゃったけど、ほんとステキでした。式が終わると、入ってきたときとは逆の順序で通路を歩いて退場。入場のときとはうって変わって、みんなずいぶんリラックスして楽しそうでしたね。さあ、これからがホントのお楽しみの始まり！　ってわけで１階に降りると、ＤＪがステキな曲をかけててとってもいい雰囲気に。テーブルの上にはたくさんのお酒やおいしそうな料理がならんでいたけど、ぐっと我慢してまずは乾杯。いちばん最初はベストマンのジョンが乾杯の音頭をとりました。すっごくおもしろい乾杯だったんですよ。次にもう１人のベストマン、ドンにマイクが渡されました（「ジョンとドン」なんて、語呂がよすぎて笑っちゃいますよね。結婚式の間中、おかしくてたまらなかったよー）。ドンは自分で作った歌を奥様と一緒に歌ってくれました。その歌は「Hava Nagila」の曲に、「ソーリー＆ベスニー」という詞をつけた替え歌。もう爆笑につぐ爆笑で、みんなにも聴かせてあげたかったなあ。

次は私の番です。私は立ち上がって、「ものごとには全て理由があるんですよね」なんて、しくしく泣きながらセンチメンタルなスピーチ。そのスピーチも無事終わり、最後は写真家のマークがユーモアあふれるスピーチで締めくくってくれました。さあ、やっと食べられるぞー！

この日、私が彼女のためにしてあげる大きなプレゼント、それは歌を歌うことでした。ずっと前からベサニーの結婚式では歌を歌おうと思っていたんです。それも、彼女だけのために作ったオリジナルの歌を。でも、引っ越しやなんかで、曲作りが間に合わなかったんですよね。で、私はセカンドアルバム「パンドラの箱」のカラオケを持ち込み、ヘブライ語のラブソング「Yedid Nefesh」をその曲にあわせて歌うことにしました。いつ歌おうか、いつ歌おうかと思ってずっと待ってたんだけど、なかなかいいタイミングがつかめず、とうとうパーティーも終わりに近づきました。残ったのは家族と親しい友人だけになったそのとき、ＤＪが私の肩をたたきました。「さあ、君の番だよ！」。私はマイクをとって、短い自己紹介とお祝いの言葉の後、歌い始めました。世界でいちばん大事な友達ベサニーと、その新しいパートナーのために。

私が歌ったこのラブソングが、その夜最後の歌に。すばらしい結婚式の夜を締めくくる最高のエンディングになりました。私も、他のみんなもきっと一生忘れないでしょうね。
