Change of Plans
Now I know that just a few diaries ago I was telling you all of my plans to move from New York back to my hometown of Philadelphia. And I meant every word at the time. And then, I went to Los Angeles. I wrote to you about my enlightening experience getting lost; I told you about the fun we had at Bethany's bachelorette party; I plan on writing all about the scintillating salsa scene in LA; and I alluded to the fact that I made many new friends. All of that, and much more, has made me change my plans. Did I mention that I always wanted to live in LA? That when I was 19 I convinced my parents to choose the city of angels as our winter vacation destination? That I hate the cold and tend to get depressed when the weather is grey? That, basically, I have always wanted to live in LA. But never quite had the guts to pick up and move there. I knew I had changed my mind when my week vacation in LA to visit my best friend turned into two weeks; when one day I found myself looking at the apartment listings in the local paper; when I stopped telling people I was "just visiting". And then it happened. The one missing link was an apartment, and on the very last day of my extended "vacation", I happened to find a listing for a place in the Hollywood Hills it was the bottom half of a small house that the owner had turned into an apartment in its own right. It was my last day in town, and I had planned to spend it seeing what was available. I made appointments for the entire day, and I drove around the city like a madwoman, but never found anything I liked. Until I pulled up to this house in the Hollywood Hills and there it was. My apartment. The owner, Lauren, lives upstairs. She's an editor for television and film, and has lived in that house for ten years. In fact, she herself used to live on the bottom floor, so it was beautifully designed and appointed with mirrors and hardwood floors. There are four rooms: living room, dining-kitchen, office, and bedroom, and of course a bathroom. The selling point for me, though, was the back porch a beautifully-landscaped back yard area with a flagstone porch. I could imagine myself sitting out there, having my morning coffee or reading a book. I could imagine having parties out there with great red wine and great friends. I could imagine being happy there. So I took it. Again, like with the Philadelphia apartment, I made up my mind instantly. Or more accurately, I didn't think at all and just listened to my gut. I love the hills, the green, the cool oasis of shade in the middle of the California sun. The location was near everything I planned on doing and everyone I planned on going when I lived there. It was perfect. So I called the landlord for the Philadelphia apartment and told her I couldn't take the place after all. And I gave Lauren a deposit and we worked out the details of moving in. After arriving home in Philadelphia, I contracted with a moving company to move my things, and an auto transport company to move my car. I arranged for my utilities to be turned on, got a great new phone number (with "78" for my company name "nanahachi" repeated twice in the number!), and most excitingly I arranged for DSL high-speed internet access! And yesterday, the moving van came and took an unbelievable 187 boxes filled with all my worldly goods to California. It took four Russian guys three hours to pack the van with my boxes, and it will supposedly take 3 weeks for them to arrive at their new home. I spent a full week packing, and am totally exhausted, but yet somehow relieved. I am not, as you can imagine, looking forward to UN-packing! So, my friends, I am taking the plunge. Really doing it this time. Finally fulfilling a dream. Or at least trying it on for size. I will most definitely let you know how it is. 何回か前のダイアリーでしたよね、ニューヨークから、実家のあるフィラデルフィアに引っ越すんだっていう計画をお話したのは。あのときは確かにそういう予定になっていたのです。でも、あの後ロサンゼルスに行っちゃったんですよねぇ・・・。 ロサンゼルスでの出来事は、みなさんにもいくつかお話しましたよね。道に迷ったおかげで素晴らしい出会いに恵まれこと。ベサニーの独身お別 れパーティーで思いっきり楽しい時間を過ごしたこと。そうそう、Ｌ.Ａ.のきらめくようなサルサのダンスシーンのこともそのうちお話しなくちゃ。新しい友達がたくさんできたってこともね。 そんなこんなでいろいろあって、私の引っ越し計画は大きく変更されることになるのです。私、昔からずっとＬ.Ａ.に住んでみたかったんですよね。19歳の冬休み、家族旅行の行き先を「天使の町」ロサンゼルスにしようって両親を説得したこともあったなあ。寒いのが大の苦手で、灰色の空を見てると落ち込んじゃうんですよね。だから、もうずーっと昔からＬ.Ａ.に住んでみたいっていうのが基本的に心の中にあって。でもね、荷物をまとめてＬ.Ａ.に引っ越しちゃうだけの勇気はなかったわけです。 自分の気持ちの変化に気づいたのは、１週間の予定だったＬ.Ａ.滞在を２週間に延長したとき。地元の新聞で新しいアパートメントを探している自分に気づいたとき。「Ｌ.Ａ.には何しに来てるの？」と人に聞かれて「遊びにきてるだけ」と言わなくなったとき・・・。 あとはアパートメントさえ決まれば・・・そんな気持ちになった私にある出来事が。延長したバケーションもほんとに今日が最後という日、ある物件を見つけてしまったのです。それはハリウッドヒルズにある小さな家で、持ち主が１階部分だけをアパートメントとして貸しているというのです。 町にいるのもこの日が最後ということで、その日１日はアパートメント探しにかけようと決めていたんです。朝から晩まで予約をびっちり入れて、狂ったように車で町じゅうを走り回ったんだけど、１軒も気に入るところがない。でもそれも、ハリウッドヒルズのこの家にたどり着くまでのお話。そう、やっと見つけたんです、私のアパートメントを。 持ち主のローレンが住んでいるのは２階。テレビや映画の編集者として活躍する彼女は、この家に住んで10年なんだって。１階はもともとローレンが住んでいたそうで、とてもセンスがよく、鏡やハードウッドのフローリングがとても素敵なんですよ。１階には、リビング、ダイニング、事務所それにベッドルームの４部屋。もちろんバスルームもあります。でも私がこの家でいちばん気に入ったのは、なんといっても裏庭のポーチ！ ポーチの床には石が敷き詰められ、裏庭からは素晴らしい景色が眺められるんです。そこにいる自分を想像するだけでわくわくしちゃうくらい。座ってモーニングコーヒーを飲んでる私、本を読んでる私、赤ワインを片手にたくさんの友達とパーティーを開いている私・・・そこにいる私はいつも幸せそうな気がするのです。 というわけで、このアパートメントに決定！ フィラデルフィアのときと一緒で、またまた衝動的に決めてしまいました。というより、何も考えず本能に従ったって感じかな。さんさんと照りつけるカリフォルニアの太陽、涼しげな木陰を作ってくれる緑の木々・・・私は、こんなハリウッドヒルズが大好きなんです。何をするにも誰に会うにもすごく便利な場所だし。まさにパーフェクト！ フィラデルフィアの方のアパートメントの大家さんには、電話を入れてお断りさせてもらいました。ローレンには保証金を払い、引越しの詳しい日取りなんかを打ち合わせ。フィラデルフィアに戻ってからは、引っ越し屋さんに申し込んだり、車を運んでくれる会社を手配したり。ガスや電気も使えるようにしたし、新しい電話番号もとりました（私の会社の名前「ナナハチ（78）」が２回も繰り返されるというスバラシイ電話番号なのだ！）それから、高速インターネットアクセスのDSLも申し込んだしね（これがいちばんの楽しみ！）。 そして昨日、引っ越しのトラックがやってきて私の荷物を運んでいきました。その数187箱、信じられます?! 187箱全てを積むのに、ロシア人の引っ越し屋さんが４人がかりで３時間。その荷物が新居に到着するのには３週間くらいかかるらしい。荷物を詰めるのにまるまる１週間もかかって疲れきってる私ですが、ま、これで少し落ち着いたかな。ああ、今度は新居で荷物の片づけかぁ・・・オソロシイ、オソロシイ・・・。 さあ、もうこうなったら清水の舞台から飛び降りた気分です。とうとう夢をかなえるときがやってきたって感じ。とりあえずやるだけやってみようかな。その後の経過は、みなさんにお知らせしますからね！ 実は7月20日は私の誕生日だったんです。だから今回の引っ越しは私自身への、そして私の新しい人生へのプレゼントでもあったのです！ フィラデルフィア発最終のダイアリーでした キャラ・ジョーンズ 翻訳：山本なむを
