The first thing you should be aware of is that the " 'Buked" in the title means "Rebuked". To rebuke someone means to criticize them sharply, to punish them. In this old AfricanAmerican spiritual, the slaves sang that they were punished and "Scorned", or treated with contempt.
And they were.
But the song is a hopeful one − despite the reality of slavery, songs like these helped keep people inspired and trying hard to be free. |
