Tom Peters created the management guru industry. Before Peters,management
thinkers wrote articles in scholarly journals, gave seminars, worked
as consultants for large corporations and were generally regarded
as rather a dull lot. The biggest books on management sold under
500,000 copies.
Peters changed all that with his 1982 book "In Search of Excellence".
Co-authored with Bob Waterman the book sold an amazing 6 million
copies, and stayed on the bestseller lists for years. The book made
Peters a millionaire and a celebrity. Peters' colleagues at McKinsey,
the management consultancy firm, not believing that a book on management
could sell, had laughed at the publishing deal, whereby Peters and
Waterman would only keep the royalties for the book if it sold more
than 50,000 copies.
The book's purpose was to find out what was common amongst the
leading companies of the time. Peters studied more than 43 successful
American companies in a number of areas: consumer goods, high technology,
and services. He discovered that regardless of how different each
company was,they shared eight basic principles of management. These
were:
* having a bias for action
* keeping close to the customer
* encouraging autonomy and entrepreneurship
* seeking productivity through people
* having a hands-on attitude and be driven by values
* defining a structure and competency and sticking to it
* assuming a simple form and a lean staff
* having simultaneous loose and tight properties
Nearly 20 years since it was published "In Search of Excellence"
remains one of the most readable management books around. It is
vividly written,with anecdotes and examples from real companies
and is now regarded as a classic management book for the MBA course
or the boardroom. Known for his irreverent approach to business,
Peters has gone on to become a superstar in the field of management
consultancy, able to charge up to $80 000 for a one day seminar.
The management guru industry he created is now estimated to exceed
a billion dollars and management books,including several by Peters
himself, now regularly find their way into the best seller list.
