Imposing American Values
From Season 3 episode 13, "Night Five"
今週ご紹介するエピソードは、米国同時多発テロ９/11以降、ブッシュ氏が、Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. 「アメリカにつくか、テロリストにつくか」のような発言で、アメリカの価値観、特にキリスト教の価値観を世界に押しつけていることを皮肉ったものです。
Now, O Lord, we dedicate this presidential inaugural ceremony to you. May this be the beginning of a new dawn for America as we humble ourselves before you and acknowledge you alone as our Lord, our Savior and our Redeemer. We pray this in the name of the Father, and of the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The plain message conveyed by the new administration is that George W. Bush's America is a Christian nation, and that non-Christians are welcome into the tent so long as they agree to accept their status as a tolerated minority rather than as fully equal citizens. In effect, Bush is saying: "This is our home, and in our home we pray to Jesus as our savior. If you want to be a guest in our home, you must accept the way we pray."
このほぼ９ヶ月後に9/11が起きた後は、アメリカが一気に右翼キリスト教化して、ブッシュ氏は９月16日には、This crusade, this war on terrorism is going to take a while. 「この十字軍、テロに対する戦いは時間がかかるだろう」と発言し、あたかも善の象徴であるキリスト教徒が邪悪なイスラム教徒を成敗する、という含みを持つこの言葉はイスラム教国から激しい非難を浴びました。
さらに10月17日には、It's also important for people to know we never seek to impose our culture or our form of government.「我々は決してアメリカの政治体制や文化を押しつけようとはしていない、ということを是非知って頂きたい」と言った直後に、We just want to live under those universal values, God-given values.「我々は普遍的な価値観の下、キリスト教の神が与えてくれた価値観の下で暮らしたいだけだ」と本音を言ってしまっています。
America doesn't have a monopoly on what's right. And even if we did, I think you're gonna have a tough time convincing the Arab world.
「アメリカは正義を独占してるわけじゃないのよ。もしそうだとしても、アラブ世界は納得しないわ」
と批判します。
でも、トビーは、
Grotesque oppression isn't okay just because it's been institutionalized. If you ask me, we should have gotten into the game three, four decades ago, but they're coming after us now, so it's time to saddle up.
"Our goal is neither to preach nor proclaim American values. We have deep respect for our Islamic brothers and sisters and we have a great deal to learn from the values of tolerance and faith that are deeply held throughout the Islamic world." So this is your way of saying any resemblance the previous paragraph may have had to foreign policy is purely coincidental?
ちなみに、このエピソードが放送されたのは2002年２月６日ですが、その後ブッシュ氏のキリスト教的価値観の押し売りはさらに激化し、2002年 11月21日には、リトアニアで、I like to tell people, freedom is not an American gift. Freedom is a gift from the Almighty God. And I firmly believe that.「よくみんなに言ってあげるんだが、自由はアメリカが与える贈り物ではない。自由はキリスト教の全能の神からの贈り物だ。わしはそう固く信じとる」と、おっしゃっています。
さらに、2002年８月１日、ヨルダンのアブドラ国王との共同記者会見の席では、 I cannot speak strongly enough about how we must collectively get after those who kill in the name of -- in the name of some kind of false religion.「声を大にして言いたい。我々はなんとしてでも団結して、名のもとに --- ワケの分からんエセ宗教の名の下に人殺しをする連中を追跡しなければならん。」と言って、イスラム教を公然と侮辱しています。
