And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our

Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of
it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.（*脚注１） 「あなたは園のどの木からも自由に実を取って食べてよいが、善悪を知る木からは取って食べてはならない。それから取って食べるとあなたは絶対死ぬ」
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the
field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath
God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 「主なる神が造った野の生き物の中で、蛇が最も狡猾だった。その蛇が女に言った。『園のどの木からも取って食べてはいけない、と本当に神が言ったのですか？』」
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of
the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which
is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither
shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 「女は蛇に言った。『私たちは園の木の実を食べることを許されていますが、園の中央にある木の実だけは取って食べるな、触れるな、死んでしまうから、と神に言われました』」
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely
die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall
be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 「蛇は女に言った。『あなたがたは決して死んだりしません。それを食べるとあなた方の目が開き、神のように善悪を知る者となることを神は知っているのです』」
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,
and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one
wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her
husband with her; and he did eat. 「女がその木を見ると、それはおいしそうで、見目麗しく、賢くしてくれそうに見えたので、女は実を取って食べ、一緒にいた夫にも与え、彼も食べた」
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew
that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves
aprons. 「すると二人の目が開き、自分たちが裸であることを知り、イチジクの葉をつづり合わせて腰に巻いた」
この後、神は女が蛇にそそのかされたせいで、女も男も禁断の果実を食べたことを知り、蛇にこう言います。
Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above
all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou
go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 「おまえはこういうことをしたので、全ての家畜、野の全ての獣のうち一番呪われ、腹で這いずり、一生ちりを食べるのだ」
And when he would have put him to death, he feared
the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday
was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. 「そこでヘロデはヨハネを殺そうと思ったが群衆を恐れた。それは彼らがヨハネを預言者だと見なしていたからだ。ヘロデの誕生日の祝いにヘロデヤの娘が列席者たちの前でダンスをし、ヘロデを喜ばせた。そのため、彼女の望むものは何でも与えよう、と彼は誓って約束した」
And she, being before instructed of her mother, said,
Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. And the king was sorry: nevertheless
for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it
to be given her. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. 「すると彼女は母にそそのかされて、『バプテスマのヨハネの頭（首）を大皿に載せてここに持ってきてください』と言った。王はかわいそうだと思ったが、既に誓っていたし、列席者たちの手前、首を与えるように命じ、人を遣わして獄中でヨハネの首をはねた」
And his head was brought in a charger, and given to
the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came, and
took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. 「その首は大皿に載せられて娘に渡され、彼女はそれを母のところへ持っていった。そしてヨハネの弟子たちが来て死体を引き取り葬って、ジーザスのところへ行って報告した」
