数週にわたって、キリスト教の宗教的背景がよくわかるショーン・コネリー主演の映画『薔薇の名前（原題：The Name of the Rose）』を題材に、知っておくと役立つキリスト教の知識に関してお届けしています。
『薔薇の名前』には聖書からの引用がたくさん出てきますが、この物語を理解する上で特に重要なのは「ヨハネの黙示録（The
Book of Revelation）」からの引用です。
「ヨハネの黙示録」は英語では、「The Book of Revelation」という名称で呼ばれることが最も多いのですが、「The
Apocalypse of John（apocalypseはギリシア語でrevelation（黙示）の意味）」と呼ばれることもありますし、原理主義者たちは「The
Revelation of Jesus Christ（イエス・キリストの黙示録）」と呼ぶことを好んでいます。
And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets. And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. 「そして私は神の御前に立つ７人の天使を見た。彼らは７つのラッパを与えられていた。もう一人の天使が現れ、金の香炉を持って祭壇の前に立った。彼にたくさんの香が与えられた。全ての聖人たちの祈りに添え、王座の前にある金の祭壇に捧げるためだ」
And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers
of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand. And the angel
took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into
the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an
earthquake. 「香の煙は聖者たちの祈りとともに天使の手から神の前に立ち昇った。それから天使は香炉を取り、祭壇の火でそれを満たし、地に投げつけた。すると声が聞こえ雷鳴がとどろき、稲妻が光り地震が起きた」
And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared
themselves to sound. The first angel sounded, and there
followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and
they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up,
and all green grass was burnt up. 「すると７つのラッパを持っていた７人の天使がラッパを吹く用意をした。第一の天使がラッパを吹くと、血の混じったひょうと炎が降り注ぎ、木々の３分の１が焼け、青草が全焼した」
And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great
mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of
the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in
the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. 「第二の天使がラッパを吹くと、燃えさかる巨大な山のようなものが海に投げ込まれ、海の３分の１が血となった。そして海の生物の３分の１が死に、船の３分の１が破壊された」
And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great
star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third
part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the
star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood;
and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. 「そして第三の天使がラッパを吹くと、ランプのように燃える大きな星が天から落ちてきて、河川、水源の３分の１の中に落ちた。この星は苦もよぎという名で、水の３分の１が苦もよぎのように苦くなり、そのせいで多くの人々が死んだ」
In the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when
he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath
declared to his servants the prophets. 「第七の天使がラッパを吹くとき、神の秘めた計画が成熟する。神自身が下僕である預言者たちに良い知らせとして告げた通りに」
After the hailstorm with the second trumpet the sea
became blood and behold here is blood.The third trumpet a burning star will
fall in fountains of water. 「ひょうの嵐の後、第二のラッパで海が血になった。見よ、まさに血まみれではないか。第三のラッパで燃える星が水源に落ちるのだ」
