アメリカの公立小中学校や幼稚園では、毎朝、生徒がアメリカの国旗、星条旗に向かって右手を左胸にあて、「忠誠の誓い（the Pledge of
Allegiance）」という文句を唱えています。
どんな文句かご紹介しましょう。
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and
to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.
1924年に「my Flagだと移民が混同するといけない」という心配りから I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to
the Republic for which it stands, one Nation, indivisible, with liberty
and justice for all.と改訂されました。
*atheistは「神の存在を否定する人」という意味なので、I'm an atheistと言ったらキリスト教徒にケンカをふっかけているようなものなので、使い方に気をつけてください。日本語の「無神論者」は、英語では
atheistよりもagnostic「神が存在するかどうか知ることはできないと思っている人」に近いでしょう。
* 赤狩りMcCarthyism the Red Purge
アメリカで1940年代後半から1950年代に行われた共産主義者の排斥運動。上院議員、ジェセフ・マッカーシーに代表される政治家が主導したため、マッカーシズムとも言われる。確かな証拠もなしに、容疑だけで多数の人をつるしあげ、多くの映画人なども犠牲になった。
