Shikiri
After the rituals of shiko, sonkyo and chiri-chozu,
it is time for shikiri. Each wrestler places his
hands on his side of the shikiri-sen; each stares
at the other, in a moment of judgement. This posture
is assumed by both at the same time, practically
in the same breath. This is repeated a number of
times: the maximum time allowed is 2 minutes for
those ranked as makushita or lower, 3 minutes for
juryo, and 4 minutes for makuuchi wrestlers.
Tachiai
While the bout is in progress the gyoji may yell
out, "Hakkeyoi nokotta nokotta!"
The tachiai is the moment when both rikishi lunge
forward from the shikiri-sen line. If both men have
waited until the end of their allotted time, the
gyoji will put his fan flat, place it between the
pair, and proclaim, "Matta nashi" (no
time to wait!). Both wrestlers must now place their
hands on the ground at the same time and lunge.
Winner and Loser
The outcome is decided in a short period of time.
There are 70 ways to win but in actual fact most
bouts end in victory after an oshi (push), yori
(grip) or tsuki (slap or thrust).
Here are some examples:
(1) During the tachiai, one rikishi flies at and
collides with his rival, his arms bent and his body
weight forced against the other (this is the buchi-kamashl).
He pushes up against the other's chest and chin
to throw him off balance (kachi-age). With this
same motion he pushes his opponent's chest, forcing
him out of the ring (tsuki-dashl).
(2) Following the tachiai and buchi-kamashi, one
wrestler grabs his opponent's mawashi, then uses
the entire mass of his own body to push the other
gradually out of the ring (yori-kiri).
(3) During the tachiai one man takes a lunge at
the other. The latter sidesteps, slaps the other
on the shoulder or back, causing him to pitch forward
and touch his hand on the ground (hataki-komi).
