Honné
and Tatemaé (Real Intention and Principle)
|
The difference between honné and tatemaé can genuinely
baffle overseas salesmen. This refers to the difference between
what one says and what one thinks. It is not an attempt to deceive
the other party. and most business talks (Shodan) proceed with
the understanding that this fine boundary is understood. |

To grasp someone's real intentions, it is vital
to keep track of their every word and gesture. |
 |
In Japanese, "hai" does
not mean "yes." It should be understood as an assurance
that "I do hear what you are saying" and nothing more. |
 |
A smile can contain a light sense of denial and
should not always be accepted at face value. |
 |
The Japanese avoid direct expression
of their honné, using variovs signs to convey it. Only experience
will cultivate understanding of this process. |

Nemawashi
(Laying the Groundwork) |
Very rarely will a business talk result in an on-the-spot decision.
Important matters will lead to more talks, delaying the final decision.
Nemawashi refers to the method of completing this lengthy process
before the actual business talk. It is normally conducted in the
following manner: |

First, an unofficial meeting is held with the manager
in charge, to present the issue and request nemawashi. |
 |
The manager talks with those (with decision-making
authority) who will attend the final conference and gains their
unofficial approval. |
 |
An official business talk then takes place, with
the company formally deciding to study the matter. |
 |
The conference is held with those present offering
official approval. In this way, the decision is reached much sooner
than through the normal process. |
