The Tanabata festival is seen in various
parts of the country. Originally it was held on Jul. 7 by the lunar
calendar, but today it is generally observed on the same date by
the modern calendar. On Tanabata night, many families decorate
bamboo poles with tanzaku. These simile decorations from the basis
for the elaborate and colorful displays at the big Tanabata festivals
of Sendai and Hiratsuka. These big festivals are held during several
days around Aug. 7, one month later than usual.

Sendai Tanabata Matsuri
仙台七夕まつり
Sendai's Tanabata festival is one of the three biggest, and
millions of visitors flock to this city during the Tanabata
season.

Tanabata Etoro Matsuri
七夕絵灯ろうまつり
At this festival, huge paper lanterns painted with pictures
of ukiyoe-style because or popular show-business personalities
are displayed along the main streets.

Kenka Tanabata
けんか七夕
The main attraction at this festival is a jostling match between
festival floats decorated with tens of thousands of tanzaku.

Kaijo Tanabata Matsuri
海上七夕まつり
20 beautifully- decorated fishing boats, many bearing 20 m.
bamboo poles with up to 30.000 red tanzaku attached, assemble
and cruise around Bay.

Matsumoto-no-Tanabata
松本の七夕
Tanabata is celebrated in the Matsumoto district by displaying
various Tanabata dolls made of paper, including some in the
form of loving couples and some wearing children's kimono.
