Sutras
 |
A priest comes from a temple to read sutras
before the home altar. |
 |
Those who pay their respects
bring koden (literally, "incense money"),
which they place on the altar. The envelopes
hold from 2000 to 5000 yen, but close relatives
give more.
The strings fastening the envelope are tied
to make a knot opposite to that used on festive
occasions. |
Incense
Incense is offered as a prayer for the repose of the soul. The following is the order followed by some Buddhist sects:
 |
 |
 |
 |
(1) Take a pinch of incense in your right
hand.
|
(2) Raise it level to
your forehead.
|
(3) Drop it in the incense censer. |
(4) Place your hands together
in prayer. |
 |
Leaving
home for good
The actual climax of the funeral comes when
the coffin is carried out of the home, never
to return. But first, mourners take turns
in an unusual ritual, in which they go through
the motions of securing the coffin lid shut
with a stone and nail. |
 |
The
Hearse
The coffin is placed in a hearse and taken
to the crematorium. |
 |
Cremation
The vast majority of bodies are cremated in
Japan. The coffin, too, is burned. |
 |
Kotsuage
After cremation, two of the mourners use long
chopsticks to pick up certain bones and place
them in an urn. |
 |
Before entering their own homes,
mourners purify themselves with salt. |
 |
Final
rest
The urn is kept at home for 49 days, then
taken to the cemetery for the final rest. |
