Daily life in Japan has
little connection with religion, but funerals are
ceremonies of deep religious significance. The vast
majority of funerals are Buddhist. Sutras are read
by the priest, and the chief mourner (a family member,
perhaps the spouse or elder brother) and the funeral
council spokesman (a close friend or relative) have
their own roles to play. But behind the scenes,
making things run smoothly, is the undertaker. When
possible, the body is brought home and given a religious
ceremony there, but a temple or hall is used if
the house is too small.
A Buddhist funeral
Some cannot attend the funeral, so they telegram
their condolences, which are read aloud.
Temples usually have no chairs, but nowadays people
appreciate their being provided.
Preparing the body

The
body is washed with hot water and alcohol.
The hair is arranged and the face made up
a little. |

Usually the body
is dressed in white clothes (the traveling
outfit for the road to Heaven), then placed
in a simple coffin. |

Two
chopsticks stand straight up in a bowl heaped
with rice (never put your chopsticks like
this usually), and a sword is placed close
to the head, to ward off evil. The body is
always laid with the head towards the north.

The
Ｗake
A wake is held the night before the
funeral. This is the time for family members,
relatives, and friends to gather at the departed
person's home. Food and alcohol are served. |
