■手招き
日本や韓国、インドネシアなどでは、手招きするときに掌を下に向けて手を上下に振ります。ところが、欧米人にはこれは「あっちに行け」か「さようなら」と言っているように見えてしまうのです。アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、オーストラリアでは、掌を上に向けて、指または手や腕全体を手前に向かって振るのが普通
です。

■The
“Come Here” Sign
In places like Japan, Korea, and Indonesia, to beckon
someone to come to you, you move your hand up and down,
with the palm downward. But to Westerners, it might he
seen as the sign meaning “go over there” or “goodbye.”
In America, Europe, and Australia, it is customary to
beckon people by turning your palm upward and moving your
fingers, wrist, or entire arm. |
■丸サイン
人差し指と親指で丸をつくるサインは、OKサインとして広く知られています。日本ではこれが「お金」を意味することがあり、韓国や台湾でも同様です。
ところが、ブラジルではこれは性的な意味を持つ卑狼なサインになってしまうのです。日本人駐在員夫人たちが「今月ちょっとコレが足りなくて・・・」とこのサインをしていたところ、周りのブラジル人に大笑いされたという話があります。また、フランスでは「OK」のほかに、「ゼロ」「全然価値がない」といった意味で使われることがあります。 |
■THE
“OK” SIGN
The sign made by touching the tips of your index finger
and thumb to form a circle is widely known as the “OK
sign.” In Japan, this sometimes carries the meaning of
money the same as in Korea and Taiwan.
But in Brazil this sign has sexual connotations and is
considered obscene. There is a story told by Japanese
businessmen living in Brazil. When one of them made that
sign and said, “This month I didn't have quite enough,”
it made the Brazilians around him burst out laughing.
Also, in France, besides meaning OK, this sign is sometimes
used to mean “zero”, or “no value at all.” |
■Ｖサイン
人差し指と中指を立てた形は、世界共通の「Ｖサイン」。ただしイギリスでは、手の甲を相手のほうに向けてはいけません。「くたばれ」といったののしりの合図になってしまうのです。日本人は「２」というときにこのしぐさをするクセがあるので、イギリス人を相手にするときは手の向きに要注意です。 |
■THE
“V” SIGN
All over the world raising the index finger and middle
finger is known as the “V sign.” However, when doing this
gesture in England, the back of your hand should not face
anyone because that means “go to hell!”Because Japanese
people are in the habit of using this sign to mean “two”,
when you are talking to an English person, take care which
way as your hand faces. |
■親指を立てる
４本の指を握って親指を突き立てるサインは、「OK」の印。これは、アメリカ人のしぐさが世界に広まったようです。多くの国ではこれはヒッチハイクのときのサインとしても使われています。ところがオーストラリアでは、ヒッチハイクをするときには手を上にあげるだけです。オーストラリアではヒッチハイクが禁止されているため、大っぴらにこのしぐさをするのを避けるようになったのではないかと言われています。 |
■THE
“THUMBS UP” SIGN
The sign made by clenching four fingers and pointing the
thumb in the air means “OK”. This is originally an American
custom that has now spread worldwide. In many countries,
this is the sign you use when you are hitchhiking. However,
in Australia, when you hitchhike, all you need to do is
stick your hand out with the palm up. This is said to
be because hitchhiking is illegal in Australia, so it
is better not to openly make the “thumbs up”sign. |
■鼻の頭を指さす
日本や中国、シンガポールなどでは、自分のことを指す印です。でも、欧米人には、「鼻がどうかしたんだろうか？」と思われてしまうかもしれません。欧米では、自分のことを指すときには、指を自分の胸のあたりに向けます。 |
■POINTING
TO YOUR NOSE
In countries like Japan, China, and Singapore, this is
the gesture you make when referring to yourself. But it
might happen that Westerners simply think, “Is there something
wrong with his nose? ”When Westerners want to refer to
themselves, they point a finger at their chest. |
■小指を立てる
日本や韓国では小指を立てて「アイツにコレができた」と言うと、男性に恋人または愛人ができたことを意味します。ところが、中国やシンガポール、インドネシアなどでは、「最低」とか「一番小さい」といった意味になります。また、インドに行くと、なぜか「トイレに行ってくる」と言いたいときに使うことになります。 |
■STICKING
UP YOUR LITTLE FINGER
In Japan and Korea, when you point your little finger
up and say, “That guy just got this,” it means that the
fellow has just found a girlfriend or a lover. But in
countries like China, Singapore, and Indonesia, it means
“the worst,” or “the smallest.” Or when you're in India,
for some reason you use this gesture when you want to
say, “I'm going to the toilet.” |

たいていの国では、「性器」「性交」のニュアンスがあり、人前ですると相手を軽蔑することになります。ところが、ブラジルではこれは幸運の印で、置物やアクセサリーに、この手の形をしたものがあります。 |

YOUR THUMB THROUGH YOUR FINGERS
In almost all countries, this sign has overtones of the
genitals or sexual intercourse, and if done in public
will insult the person you're with. But in Brazil, this
is the sign of good fortune, and you will find ornaments
and accessories which feature this sign. |
■入差し指をカギ形に曲げる
日本では「コソ泥」と言うときに使われますが、中国では「９」を表す印です。また、中国では人差し指と中指を交差させると「10」という意味になります。この指の形が、漢字の「十」に似ているからです。一方、欧米ではこれは十字架をかたどったサインになり、「幸運を祈る」という意味になります。 |
■BENDING
YOUR INDEX FINGER INTO A HOOK
In Japan, you use this sign to signal a petty thief, but
in China, this sign stands for the number nine. Also,
in China, crossing your index finger and your middle finger
indicates the number ten. This is because the shape of
two fingers crossed resembles the kanji character
for ten. On the other hand, in the West, this sign resembles
the Christian cross, and it means you are wishing for
good luck. |
■ウィンク
日本ではウィンクは気になる異性に向かってする合図だと思われていますが、欧米ではいたずらっぽく「今のはウソ」「ないしょだよ」と言いたいときに使われます。だから、異性にウィンクされたからといって、相手の気持ちを深読みする必要はなさそうです。 |
■WINKING
In Japan, a wink is something you do when facing someone
of the opposite sex you are attracted to. However, Westerners
also use a wink to mean something sly, like “I'm lying,”
or “Let's keep this a secret.” So if somebody of the opposite
sex winks at you, you shouldn't read too much into it. |
■ほおをなでる
中国人は「恥ずかしい」というときに人差し指でほおをなでますが、フランス人が手の甲でほおをなでていたら、それは「退屈」ということです。これは本来、退屈なあまり自分のあごひげをなでて時間をつぶしているということを意味するようです。 |
■PATTING
YOUR CHEEK
When Chinese people use their index finger to pat their
cheek, it means “I'm embarrassed.” But when people in
France stroke their cheek with the back of their hand,
it means they are bored. This practice apparently got
started in the past when men used to stroke their beards
to kill time. |
■腕組みをする
腕組みをすると尊大な感じに見えるので、人前ではあまりよいイメージを与えません。でも、イタリアではこれが「あなたの話をちゃんと聞いていますよ」という印になります。しゃべるときにはたいてい手のジェスチャーが入るので、腕組みをしているということは、「とりあえず私は黙って聞いている」という合図になるのです。 |
■CROSSING
YOUR ARMS
Because crossing your arms gives an impression of arrogance,
it doesn't make a good impression in public. But in Italy
it carries the meaning, “I'm listening closely to what
you're saying.” That's because when Italians talk they
gesture a lot, so crossing their arms indicates that “for
the moment, I'm listening quietly.” |
