Interview Eight:Paul Auster（ポール・オースター）

Auster: And I think most people came to the conclusion that what
we believe in is democracy. I mean, if we have a religion in the United
States it's democracy. We don't always practice it very well, but that
is the faith that keeps us together. And if nothing else, the book, the
National Story Project itself and the book are examples of democracy
in action.
Shibata: Yes.
Auster: And the most beautiful event of all, which was the last
one, was in New York. And for this one - and I had been planning to do
this even before September 11th - I wanted to make it an evening celebrating
New York, because there are quite a few stories in the book about New
York City .
Shibata: Right.
Auster: In fact, out of all the thousands of stories I received,
New York is the only city that people want to write about. And it doesn't
mean that these people live in New York. They're from all over the country.
New York is an idea, in addition to just being a place. And there's no
other city in America that is like that. So there were many stories in
which New York is literally a character in the story.
But this evening we expanded, and we had six or seven of the contributors,
but also a number of writers that I invited to get up and read some of
the stories. Peter Carey was there, and Susan Sontag, and Art Spiegelman,
they read - and some actors as well, John Turturro and Joan Allen. They
all read, we all read, and it was a beautiful, a beautiful evening. And
one of the most, I think, memorable evenings I've ever had in my life.
Shibata: Yes. It sounds just wonderful. I wish I could have been there.
忘れえぬ一夜の出来事
オースター そして、大方の人々が達した結論とは、我々が信じているのはデモクラシーだ、ということだと思う。このアメリカという国に何か宗教があるとすれば、それはデモクラシーなんだ。我々はそれをつねにうまく実行できているわけじゃない。でもその信仰が、我々をひとつに結びつけている。そしてあの本は、そしてナショナル・ストーリー・プロジェクト自体が、何よりもまず、デモクラシー実践の例だったのさ。
柴田 ええ。
オースター 最高に素晴らしかったのは、一番最後の、ニューヨークで開いたイベントだ。これについては、９月11日以前から計画を練っていたんだが、ニューヨークを祝福する一夜にしたかったんだ。あの本にはニューヨークについての話がずいぶんあるからね。
柴田 そうですね。
オースター 実際、何千と受け取った物語のなかで、みんなが書きたがった街はもっぱらニューヨークだった。しかもその人たちがニューヨークに住んでいるとは限らない。アメリカ中の人たちなのさ。ニューヨークは、単なる場所というだけじゃなく、ひとつの理念なんだ。そういう都市は、アメリカ中ほかにどこにもない。というわけで、ニューヨークが文字どおり一人の登場人物であるような物語がいくつもあった。
で、この晩はいつもより規模を大きくして、物語の書き手を６人か７人呼んだ上に、作家も何人か招いて、壇上に上がって朗読してもらったんだ。ピーター・ケアリー、スーザン・ソンタグ、アート・スピーゲルマン、それにジョン・タートゥーロ、ジョーン・アレンといった俳優も来てくれた。みんなが朗読してくれて、僕らもみんな朗回読して、本当に素晴らしい一夜だった。僕の人生で、こんなに記憶に残る晩もほかにそうざらにないと思う。
柴田 ええ、さぞ素晴らしかったでしょうね。僕も行きたかったな。
