キリスト教国最大のイベントであるクリスマス。日本人の多くが大晦日といえば「紅白」を連想するように、英語圏各国にもクリスマスといえばコレ、と思い浮かぶキャラクターや定番がある。
クリスマスが近づくと、必ずテレビやビデオでお目見えするのが『スノーマン（The Snowman）』 。しんしんと降り積もる雪の中、スノーマンがサンタクロースをたずねていくストーリーは、この季節にふさわしい定番モノ。愛らしい雪だるまのキャラクターは親子で楽しめる作品。
ティム・バートンがリメイクしたことでもおなじみ『ナイトメアー・ビフォア・クリスマス（The Nightmare Before Christmas）』 もこのシーズン人気のアニメーション。架空都市ハロウィン・タウンを舞台に、吸血鬼、魔女、ガイコツ男といった粘土人形（クレイドール）の登場人物たちが大活躍。

『ウォレスとグルミット』

発明家のウォレスとその愛犬グルミットが繰り広げる、とぼけた味わいの『ウォレスとグルミット（Wallace & Gromit）』
もクレイドールアニメの１つ。作者のニック・パーク氏が美術学校の卒業制作として制作したこのアニメは、完成まで６年もかけた力作。『チーズ・ホリデー（A Grand Day Out） 』『ペンギンに気をつけろ！（The Wrong Trousers） 』『野菜畑で大ピンチ！（Curse of the Were-Rabbit） 』などが映画化されている。

●クリスマスソングの代表格｢クリスマス・キャロル（Christmas Carol）｣
クリスマス気分を高めてくれるものといえばクリスマスソング。12月に入ると、いたるところで耳にする美しい音楽が『クリスマス・キャロル』だ。教会でキリスト生誕を称えるために生まれた歌のジャンルだが、特に有名な『聖しこの夜』と『もろびとこぞりて』の２つをご紹介。

作曲 フランツ・グルーバー（オーストリア）
1818年12月、オーストリア・ザルツブルク近郊にあるオーベンドルフという村の教会で、故障したオルガンのかわりにギターの演奏で歌える曲として生まれた。美しい旋律は、やがてオーストリアの村から全世界へと広がり、世界的なクリスマスソングとして現在も歌い継がれている。

この歌詞にはいろいろな人が曲をつけているが、もっとも有名なものは1839年にメーソンが作曲した。
（原曲はドイツの作曲家ヘンデルの『メサイア』といわれているが、不明）
●クリスマスを題材にした映画などから作られたポピュラーソングも、定番ソングとして街角やラジオから流れてくる。

1942年にビング・クロスビー主演のアメリカ映画『ホリデイ・イン』（邦題『スイング・ホテル』 ）で発表された曲。映画は1954年に『ホワイト・クリスマス』 と改題されてリメイクされた。

オリジナルの題名は「One Horse Open Sleigh」。1850年頃、ボストン在住の作曲家ジェームズ・ピアポントが、その町のサレム・ストリート(Salem Street)で行なわれるそり競争のために作った曲。

1949年作曲。原点は1939年にアメリカのコピーライター、R・L・メイ制作のパンフレットに載せられたメルヘンのタイトル。それを元にメイの義理の兄弟にあたるマークスが作詞作曲し、爆発的人気をおさめた。
