Q. アメリカの多くの女性のポップスターは、企業側からもっとセクシーになれとプレッシャーをかけられると言われています。もしそのプレッシャーを感じていたら、どのように対抗しようとしていますか？
由美：セクシーですか（笑）
亜美：すごいよね、毎日毎日、「セクシーにセクシーに」って。
由美：そう。これ以上出せませんよ、って嘘なんですけど（笑）。本当に、うちは誰からも何をしなさいとか、お洋服はこれを着なきゃだめとか言われたこともなく、自分たちの好きなことを好きなようにやらせていただいています。その面ではすごくラッキーだと思いますし、仮に「セクシーにセクシーに」と言われたら、たぶん今ここに座ってなくて、実家に帰って家業をついでいたでしょうね。
もちろんアメリカに行っても、私たちは、今までやってきたまま、そうじゃないとやっぱりできないし。「急にアメリカだからアメリカ用にキャラクターを変えるっていうこともできませんよ」ということをお伝えしたら、「それは全然そのままでいいですよ」って言ってくださっているので、今アメリカでもできてると思います。何でしょうね、たぶんこのままやっていくんだと思いますけど、みなさんはもうちょっとセクシーな方がいいんですかね？（一同笑）
Beginning with the joke that we're being as sexy as we possibly can: this is our limit. But frankly, we've never really been ever told that you have to be a certain way, or that you have to choose certain clothes to wear, or that you have to sing a certain kind of music. We've been very blessed in that we've been able to have free reign with our music and with our fashion, etc. If there really were that kind of pressure to be very very sexy, we'd probably choose to give up show business and go back home and carry on the family business.
In the United States, if there is that kind of pressure, we probably would not agree to go on. In fact, one of the things that we said with our American colleagues was that we don't want to change our character just because we're going to go to the United States. We just want to stay the way we are, and our partner said that's absolutely fine. So we would like to continue as we are. Still, do you want us to be more sexy?
Q. 一方ではポップスター、他方ではアニメのキャラクターの主人公と、現在、２重の人生を送っているのではないかと思いますが、ときどき、アニメのキャラクターに支配される感じはしませんか？
亜美：アニメのキャラクターっていうのが、設定年齢がすごく低くて、自分の子どもでもおかしくないくらいの年なんですよ。なので、私たちは自分たちのアニメキャラと、自分たちを一緒に考えるというのはあまりないことですね。アニメに関しては本当にもう客観視というか、「今日はAmi
Yumiどんなことやってくれるんだろうね」っていう気持ちで、観てる方と同じ感じの気持ちで観ていると思います。
ですが、アニメのように110何カ国で観ていただくことは私たちにはできないですし、そんなに時間も許されてませんので、ぜひアニメにがんばっていただいて、アニメの七光りを受けてがんばりたいと思います。
First of all the cartoon certainly features characters that are based on
us, but they are characters that are of a very very young age. In fact,
the characters ages are ... possibly... they could have been our children,
that's how young they are. Therefore there's a great distance between our
personalities and the characters in the cartoon. So we don't really have
any confusion about our identities. We can regard the characters of the
program in a very objective manner. I think we watch the program the way
everybody else watches the program, which is to turn on the television and
think, "what are Ami and Yumi going to do today?"
Having said that, the animated characters are very very popular. They're
seen in 110 countries throughout the world. We cannot perform in 110 countries
through the world in the first place, physically we just would not be able
to have that kind of time. Therefore, we can only hope that these characters
go on to greater glory and that we will be able to bask in their reflected
light.
