渡辺謙さん、外国人記者クラブにて記者会見
Q. そもそも俳優という職業を選んだきっかけは？
自分が俳優になったきっかけに関しては、自分の中で非常に高いモチベーションがあったというわけではなくて、「なってしまった」、という感覚の方が非常に強かったです。まあ、音楽をやっていたということもあって、何かをパフォーマンスするというのを望んでいたというのは潜在的にはあったのだと思います。
ただ、僕自身が様々な作品やいろんな先輩と出会うことによって、あと、もちろん自分が病気をして、その中でもう一度、仕事、つまり俳優という仕事を見つめ直す時間があったおかげで、非常に今は、自分が社会とつながれている、社会とつながるために、この俳優という仕事を与えられていたんだな、ということを実感しています。
In regard to my choosing acting as a profession, it was not that I had some kind of tremendous goal or great burning desire or some really high motivation that I became an actor. It's rather that when I look back on my life, one day I looked back and I realized that I was an actor. It just is something that I ended up being. Of course, I did have a background in music, and so I think that probably there was some desire within me to be involved in performing, in some way or another.
However, I think that I have really grown into this profession because of the many experiences that I've had in meeting with people who have gone before me, my colleagues, being in wonderful works, and also I think that I was very, very fortunate that because of my illness, I was given time to really consider life, to review my life, what I wanted to do with it, and how I wanted to live it. I think that all of these things led me to realize that acting is a wonderful occupation for me because it is a way for me to achieve a link, some kind of a connection, with society and that I think is the most important thing.
 Q. 日本政府は文化外交（PR活動として日本の文化・伝統を広げ、外交に役立てる）を促進していますが、もしその映画部門担当に任命されるとしたら、どのような日本の伝統・文化を紹介しますか？
日本の持っている作品を紹介するというだけではなくて、もっといろんな意味でコラボレーション、コミュニケーションした上で、ひとつの仕事をすると、外交以上に日本というものを理解していただけることがすごく多くあるんです。
ですから、それはやはり作品ひとつ、ぽんと紹介するだけではないところで、もっと深く、僕たちの精神だったりとか、僕らも彼らの精神だったりとかを理解する、そういう機会をもっともっと増やしていければいいと思います。
True understanding, true communication, comes from working together on something: collaborating, exchanging ideas. Whenever we finish one film, one work, there are several hundred people involved, and I think that level or depth of understanding that we reach is much, much more effective than what most diplomats do.
It's not enough simply to take a work and show it in another country. I think the only way that you can really understand each other better − our spirits, our psychologies, our natures − is to really work together, side by side, and sometimes even argue, and I would like to promote more subjectivities.

 渡辺謙（Ken Watanabe）
俳優。1959年生まれ。新潟県出身。NHK大河ドラマ『独眼竜正宗』、映画『北の零年』、舞台『ハムレット』など、映画・TV・舞台で活躍。トム・クルーズと共演した『ラスト・サムライ』をきっかけに、海外にもその活躍の場を広げている。新作の主演映画『明日の記憶』では、突然襲われた若年性アルツハイマー病と闘う役を熱演。今回の会見で、本作品について「忍者も侍も出ていないが、海外に持っていきたい」と、海外進出への意気込みを見せている。
