MC（ラッパー）が日々体験したことや目にしたことをどんどん歌詞にしていくヒップ・ホップは、拡大し続ける文化だ。そして、MCにとって、自身の人生や周りの人の人生、そして理想の人生を表現する手段なんだ。ただ、ヒップ・ホップが必ずしも正しい物の見方をしているとは限らないのに、子供を含めた多くのリスナーが、MCが唱うとおりに生きようとしてしまう。その点、R&Bミュージックを届ける僕らボーイズIIメンは、ヒップ・ホップに根付く否定的な観念に対抗しているんだ。なにも、ヒップ・ホップがすべて悪いと言っているんじゃない。これは、彼らなりの自己表現法だからね。だけど僕らは、愛に満ちて楽しい世界をつくりたい。そうすることで、音楽業界にある種のバランスが保たれるから。僕らのほかにも同じ考えをもって音楽活動をし、業界にこのバランスをつくりだそうとしているアーティストはいるよ。
それから、今、ヒップ・ホップはものすごく大きな存在となっている。R&Bがラジオで存在感を示すまでには時間がかかる。電波で情報を発信するラジオでは、ラジオ局が流そうと決めた曲しかリスナーには届かないから。でも、明るい面もある。MCやヒップ・ホップアーティストで、自分の考えに従って生きている人たちもいるということだ。たとえば、ジェイZだけど、以前は自分の人生をラップの中で語っていた。今は、もっとポジティブに、過去の人生を振り返り、現在の生き方を語っている。ビジネスマンとなった今の彼を見れば、「人はいくつもの段階を経て次の段階へステップアップしようとするのだ」ということに、人々が気付くだろう。
ヒップ・ホップとR&Bの関係を語るのは難しい。それは、両者は共存しているものの、今のところヒップ・ホップが明らかに優勢だからだ。そして、誰かが現れて何か大きなことをしない限り、R&Bがヒップ・ホップと対等なレベルに戻ることはできないと思う。

It seems to me that your songs
are somewhat like old school, or I should say traditional R&B songs.
What do you think about the trend of the American hip-hop culture right
now? It's been about violence, and it has been like this since the 90's. |

Hip hop is a culture, a vastly
growing culture that is continuously growing every single day, because
the more of these MC's go through things, the more they write about,
the more they see things, the more they write about. It's their way of
expressing either the life they are living, the life that they see or
the life that they wanna live. And it's not always right way to interpret
it, because you have so many kids and people listening to you trying
to live their lives according to how you're expressing yourself, and
we feel like with Boyz II Men and with R&B music, some R&B songs,
we kinda combat the perspective of negativity. Not that it's totally
wrong, because it is their way of expressing themselves, but with Boyz
II Men, we try to keep things in the loving, fun aspects, so that there
can be some sorts of balance in the industry, and there are also other
artists who are maintaining the same kind of vibe when it comes to music
to give that balance.
And hip hop is such a strong entity right now. It takes R&B a very
long time to express itself on radio, because you got radio running the
airwaves, so it's what they choose to play is what the consumer will
hear. But look at the positive of it. There can be MC's and hip-hop artists
out there that are living their lives. Jay-Z for instance, he spoke on
how he lived, now he's speaking how he used to live and how he is living
now, which is a more positive aspect, being a business man, and helping
people to see that there are levels that you go through, and try to get
to that next level.
It's kinda difficult when you are dealing with hip hop and R&B, because
we do coexist but one is definitely stronger than the other right now.
And it's going to take someone or something to bring R&B back up
to the level. |

Wow...there are lots of them.
We listen to hip hop quite often. One thing is that it depends on the
type of R&B record that we do. We would pick a hip-hop artist that
would fit a song that we do. We wouldn't just put 'em on just because.
I mean, there is a song that's got a certain flavor that calls for Juvenile.
There is a certain record that calls for Missy Elliot or someone like
that. We cater to whichever artists we feel fits best on the record. |

ひとりひとりが特別なものをもたらしてくれたよ。おかげでそれぞれのコラボレーションが、ユニークなものになった。だから、順位をつけたり、誰が一番だと選んだりすることはできない。ヒットメーカーや大物アーティストとコラボレーションする機会に恵まれて光栄だよ。マイケル・ジャクソンやマライア・キャリー、ヒップ・ホップアーティストのLL・クール・Jも含めて、すごく大勢の人たちとコラボレーションしたけど、すべて充実してたし、ものすごく楽しかった。 |

All of them brought something
special to the table or something unique about each collaboration, so
we can't really pick which one was a better one or best one or most memorable.
We were blessed enough to work with some heavy hitters and huge people
in the business. Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey...hip hop side...LL Cool
J, so there are just a lot of people. All the collaborations were interesting
and deeply fun. |

こればかりは、自然と克服できるのを待つしかないよ。「もうこれで大丈夫。“ライターズ・ブロック”から抜け出たぞ」と言えるような、決まった克服法はないからね。どうやっても最高のアイディアが出てこなくなったら、気持ちをすっきりさせることだ。しばらくの間、音楽や作曲のことさえも忘れてしまうのがいい。散歩に行くとか、本を読むとかして、しばらく音楽を忘れる。それでも、才能ある真のソングライターだったら、最終的には何かひらめくはずだから。そのときがくれば、必ずひらめきが戻ってくるんだ。１日24時間、常にヒットソングを書ける状態にあるのは、不可能なことだからね。 |

How do you guys manage to overcome
that? |

You know... it's one of those
things that you gotta naturally come out of. It's not something you can
find some type of formula, "OK, I don't have writer's block any
more." We haven't seen the best of us, so you have to clear your
mind and just try to not even think about music or song writing just
for a bit. You just experience a little bit more of anything like...just
go for a walk or read a book or just get away from it for a minute, because
if you are a true writer and that's your gift, something will spark that
back into you eventually. It's just a matter of time. Can't write hits
songs, can't be in that mode 24 hours a day. |

クラブに行ったよ。おもしろいと思ったのは、何度か行って気付いたんだけど、日本ではヒップ・ホップがものすごく流行っているということ。それも、普通のヒップ・ホップじゃなくてハードコア。みんな、MOP、ウータン・クラン、ギャング・スター、ピッチ・ブラックといったアーティストを聴いてるんだ。あるクラブに行ったとき、思わず「ヨー、クレイジーだよ、ベイビー。ニューヨークと同じような曲をかけてるぜ」なんて言っちゃったよ。僕らが育ってきたカルチャー、そして僕らが今いるカルチャーに、日本人も夢中だというのを目の当たりにしたんだ。僕らはいつも気分よく日本に来られる。それは、日本人は流れに敏感だと思うし、僕らと同じくらいそれに夢中になってるからだよ。だから、日本のすべてが好きなんだ。 |

When we came before, we tried
to hit some clubs. What's interesting to us is that a couple of the nightspots
that we've been to, we've noticed that the Japanese culture is really
into hip hop. Not like the popular hip hop, but hardcore hip hop. They
all listen to M.O.P. and Wu-Tang Clan, GangStarr, Pitch Black and all
these other people. One club we went was like, "Yo, this is crazy,
baby. They play stuff like it was New York." So just seeing and
just witnessing the fact that the Japanese people are into the same culture
that we grew up in and that we live as well is always a cool thing. So
again, we always feel welcome and we always feel comfortable coming to
Japan, because we feel like Japan knows what's happening, and gets into
it as much as we do. So we like everything about the country. |

We just hit like a few, and
I don't even remember which ones they were. Some were cool, and some
were better than others, but it was always a good feeling. And like I
said, one particular club we went to was just like off the hook. A DJ
was spinning crazy joints. It was like, "Alright...alright..."

went to was really dark, so I don't think anybody recognized us, which
was cool, too. Because a lot of times, in our case, we wanna just go
to a place, relax, keep the vibe up and just have a good time. |
