初めて来たときは、ものすごいカルチャーショックを受けたよ。食べ物が初めてのものばかりだったのは特にね。日本の人たちに慣れるのは、思っていたほど大変じゃなかった。日本人はとても謙虚で寛大だから、苦労はしなかったよ。やっぱり大変だったのは、時差と食べ物に慣れることだったね。 |

What struck you the most
in the first visit? |

Well, the first visit was
culture shock for us that we've never been in for. Obviously...adapting
to food. I think as far as the people are concerned, it wasn't as
bad as we thought it would be. People here are very very humble and
very open, so that was the easy part. I guess the toughest part was
adjusting to the time, and adjusting to the food. |

And you know, we always had
to have interpreters with us because we don't speak Japanese so. Other
than that, it was pretty cool. |

Not necessarily. If we come
across something in our pass, we just make sure it's chicken, ha -
ha.... That's basically it. If we got a Japanese dish that tells that's

それはもうビックリだよ。日本人のファンはすごく忠誠心が強いんだ。アーティストだけでなく、好きなアーティストの音楽にも忠実なんだ。ありがたいことだと思ったよ。知っていると思うけど、アメリカでは物事の移り変わりがものすごく速い。次から次へと新しい人が現れるし、いろんなことが短い間に起こり過ぎる。だから、人々はあることに夢中になっていたかと思うと、新しい何かがブレイクすれば、すぐにそれに乗り換える。一方、優れたアーティストグループなどでも、あることに一生懸命取り組んでいたかと思うと、それがすめばすぐ別のことを始める。そうなると、それまでやっていたことには目もくれなくなる。それの繰り返しだ。でも、日本のファンは、僕らがいつ来てもすごく喜んでくれる。日本という国も個々のファンも、僕らがそれまでやってきたことを尊重し、いつ来ても前に来たときと同じように僕らを大事に思ってくれる。アメリカ人はすぐに忘れてしまうけど、日本人は覚えていてくれる。これは素敵なことだよ。 |

What kind of impressions
did you guys have on your Japanese fans compared to fans elsewhere? |

Wow, that's a big impression.
Japanese fans are very very loyal, and that right there was appreciated
because it's more of a loyalty to the music as well as the artist,
and you know, compared to the U.S., they are very a fly-by-night-type
culture, you know? Everything comes so quick to them, so next person
and next person and next person, and becomes overwhelming of things
to think about, so they gravitate to one thing, and make that the
next big thing. Whereas the other entities, which are just as other
entertainment like groups are just as talented, they tend to just
focus on one thing, and then when they are done with it, they push
them aside and go to another one. They push them aside, and it's like
that.
But with the Japanese fans, we come here and they love you no matter
what, every single time you come here. Whether collectively or individually,
they still give you the same respect. They respect what we've done
over the time that we've been here. In the U.S., they forget, you
know what I mean? Over here, they remember, and it's a beautiful thing. |

日本でコンサートをするのは素晴らしいことさ！ 以前コンサートの時間が予定をかなり超えてしまったことがあるんだ。開始から数時間も経っているのに、ファンはまったく気にせず、帰ろうとする人なんかひとりもいない。最後まで僕らと盛り上がってくれる。日本に来ると、ファンの「愛」を感じるから、僕らもその「愛」に応える。ギブ・アンド・テイクの関係だ。最高だろ。だから、僕らはいつでも喜んで、日本でコンサートをしたり、テレビに出演したり、インタービューを受けたりしてるんだ。 |

What kind of impressions
did you guys have of your Japanese fans during the concert? |

Oh, man. It's always a pleasure
to perform here because we've gone on way longer than what we planned
to perform. We were going for like at least a couple of hours, and
the Japanese public wouldn't even mind. They would stay right there,
and they wouldn't leave. They party right with us. Every time we come
here, it's always a great thing because we know that we are going
to receive love, and we are going to give it back. So it's an even
thing, and that's why we have such a great time here performing, doing
TV shows, interviews, whatever. It's always a pleasure. |

うん、初めはどちらかというと落ち着いた感じだよね。でも、「テンション上げて」ってこっちが言えば、それについてきてくれる。盛り上がってくれるから好きだよ。 |

そうなんだ。客に求めることも必要なんだ。そういうときは、客もその要求にしっかり応えてくれないとだめだよ（笑）。 |

I've noticed that fans seem
to be quieter in Japan. Did you guys notice that? |

| Wanya |
Yeah, first, they are kinda
laid back, mellow, that type of thing, but once we tell them to bring
it up a couple of notches, they do that, too. So they know how to
party, so it's all good. |

Yeah. You have to demand
the crowd. And they have to respect the demand, you know what I'm
saying? Ha-ha. |

もちろん。何人か英語で話しかけてきたよ。自分の英語がそんなにうまくないと知っていて話しかけてくる人もいる。だから、僕らとしては辛抱強く、簡単な英語で話すようにする。「えっ？
なんて言ったの？」なんて聞き返さなきゃならないこともあるよ。そうすると、日本人ファンのほうは「あ、すみません…」と言って、言い直そうとしたりする。だけど、それでもいいじゃないか。大切なのは、日本語を話せない僕らは、勇気を奮って英語で話しかけてくれる日本のファンに救われてるということさ。だから、彼らの努力をありがたく思っているよ。一生懸命英語を話し、僕らと会話しようとしてくれているんだからね。 |

Have any of your Japanese
fans spoken to you in English? |

Yeah, sure. Couple of fans
spoke English, and they admit that sometimes their English isn't that
good. So we kinda bare with them, say certain things in certain ways.
We have to go "uh? What did you say?" That type of thing,
and they go, "Oh, I'm sorry." So they try to fix it, but
it's all good because I tell you one thing, we couldn't speak Japanese,
and they save our lives. So we appreciate their efforts. They are
just trying to speak English and are trying to communicate with us. |

いいや。ずいぶん前から日本に来てるけど、日本語は複雑すぎるよ。フランス語やスペイン語は英語とよく似ていて、単語によってはそれに相当する英語の単語を思い浮かべることができる。でも、日本語は似ても似つかないからね。 |

英語が母語の僕らにとって、日本語を聞いてもこれだ、とわかる言葉がなくて、まるで効果音のように聞こえるよ。 |

Have you learned any Japanese
words? |

No. We've been here for years,
but it's such an intricate language. Usually for example, French or
Spanish or something like that is very similar to English. So we can
kinda relate certain words to words we already know, whereas Japanese
it's totally different. |

In comparison with English,
Japanese is more sound effects than actual words. |

英語を話せるようになることは、世界のほかの言葉と比べてもかなり難しい。僕らが日本語を学ぼうとすれば、大変だと感じるだろうね。だけど英語は、ネイティブスピーカーとして英語を勉強してきた立場からも、習得の難しい言葉だと思っている。母音の発音は難しいし、発音が同じなのにつづりが違う単語もある。発音記号は難解だし、単語は音節に分かれているし。接頭辞や接尾辞もつけなきゃならないしね。英語は本当に難しいよ。英語を勉強しようなんてことを考える人は、英語ができることがどんなに立派なことかわかっているんだと思う。英語が話せるのはすごいことだから、日本のファンが英語で話しかけてくるのをいやだとは思わない。英語の勉強がどんなにハードか、僕らにもわかっているからね。そんなわけで、日本のファンが僕らに英語で話しかけてくれたときは、耳を傾けるようにしているんだ。 |

learning English out of American culture or American pop music. It
would be nice if you could give some kind of advice to those who are
learning English. |

English is really one of
the hardest languages to speak in the world. And we may find it difficult
to learn Japanese, but learning English ourselves and it being our
first language, we know how difficult it is to learn, with the vowel
sounds and words that sound alike that don't look alike, symbols and
syllables. You kinda put prefixes and suffixes. English is really
tough. I think that anyone who takes on that chance to learn it knows
it's a feather in their caps, which is one of the reasons why some
of our fans try to speak to us in English. We don't take it as a bad
thing with them trying English, because we know it is a really difficult
language to learn, so we kinda bare with them when they speak to us. |
