'91年のデビュー以来、数々の記録を塗り替えてきたアメリカのスーパー・グループ、ボーイズIIメンが、前作から２年ぶりに満を持してリリースしたニュー・アルバムを引っさげて来日。６月末からは日本ツアーも控えている。ウォンヤ、ショーン、ネイザンが、ニュー・アルバムやツアー、音楽や文化、英語ついて、時にはおかしく、時にはシリアスに語ってくれた。

オーケーだったよ。もちろん長かったけど、何度も…何回だっけ？
６回か７回か８回、とにかく何度も日本に来るうちに、慣れてきたよ。だんだん楽になってきた。それに、時間も短く感じるようになってきたよ。 |

It was cool. You know, it
was long, but we're getting used to it as we take like what...6, 7,
8 times here...so many, so many. So it's getting easier. It's getting
shorter. |

先日、世界に数カ月先駆けて日本でニュー・アルバム『Throwback
Volume.1（邦題：スローバック）』をリリースしたばかりですね。今回のアルバムの中で、日本のファンに特に聴いてもらいたい曲、特におススメしたい部分は？ |

このアルバムは、どちらかというとコレクションと思ってほしいな。70年代後半から80年代前半のソウルミュージックを集めたものなんだ。当時ヒットした曲のコレクションさ。ある意味、これらの曲をひとまとめに捉えてくれていいと思う。そんなタイプのアルバムなんだ。 |

You've just released a new
album several months before the worldwide release. Are their any particular
songs or any particular part of the album that you want to recommend
to the fans of Japan? |

| Nathan |
Well, I think this album
has to be more accepted as a collection. The album is a collection
of a lot of soul songs from the late 70's and the early 80's, so they
were all hits at one time or another in their span. So it's a collection
of hit songs. So you kinda wanna accept them all as a unit to a degree.
It's just that type of album. |

「throwback」という言葉の意味は、過去のものに新しい感覚を加えるということだよ。ネイザンが言ったように、70年代後半から80年代前半の曲を集めたわけだけど、それに新しい趣向を加えたんだ。ここ数年の間に聞いたことがあるかもしれないけど、スポーツチームが「スローバック・ユニフォーム」を着てプレイする日を設けたりしてる。これが最近さらに流行ってきてるんだ。僕らは"throwback"という言葉をこんなふうに捉えてる。つまり、僕らのアルバムでは、リスナーに新しい視点で過去にヒットした曲を聴いてもらえるようにしているんだ。 |

The title of your album,
"Throwback." Could you elaborate on that? What does the
title mean? |

| Wanya |
The "Throwback"album...basically,
the title means a new vibe to the old school. Like Nate said, we took
some older records from the late 70's, early 80's and put a new twist
to them. As you've heard in the past couple of years, teams like sports
teams have been dealing in throwback jerseys and this has become more
popular. And this is our interpretation of the throwback of those
songs, just to give the audience a new view of those hit records. |

そういえば、ニュー・アルバムの中の『ヒューマン・ネイチャー』は、以前とアレンジが違っていますね。 |

そうなんだ。アルバムの中の多くの曲が、アレンジを変えてある。そのままのアレンジの曲もあるけど、そういう曲でさえも僕らのボーカルによって違った味が出てるんだ。 |

I noticed listening to one
of your songs from the album, "Human Nature", it had a different
arrangement. |

| Wanya |
Yes, yes, you know? And a
lot of the songs have different arrangements to them. There were some
that we kept straight out, but even still, our vocals have given it
a different twist as well. |

収録曲はどのように選んだんですか。また、カバー・アルバムにしようと考えた理由は何ですか。 |

| ショーン |
カバー・アルバムは、以前からいつかは出してみたいと思っていたんだ。それに、僕らのファンもずいぶん前から望んでいた。過去に出したさまざまなレコードを制作しているときに、当時出ていたほかの人の曲をやってくれないかと、ファンに言われることが時々あったんだ。「オージェイズのあの曲をやってくれ」とか、「テンプテーションズのあの曲をカバーしたらいいんじゃないか」とかね。だから、カバー・アルバムというアイデアは、常に持っていた。それで今回が絶好のチャンスだと思ったんだ。というのも、カバー・アルバムのリリースは、僕らが立ち上げた新しいレーベルの最高の出発点になるだろうから。MSM
Music Groupという僕ら自身のレーベルから、独立した立場で新たな冒険に乗り出す僕らの姿を、世界に示すことができるからね。
どんなふうに収録曲を選んだかってことだけど、少年時代に好きだった曲をただ並べてみたんだ。そこから絞り込んでいって今回の選曲に落ち着いた。だから、「Volume1」なんだよ。好きな曲をすべてひとつのアルバムに収めることはできないでしょ。今回が「Volume1」で、多分このあとシリーズとしてどんどん続いていくと思う。 |

How did you choose the songs
for the album? Why did you guys decide to come back with cover songs? |

| Shawn |
This is something that we've
wanted to do for sometime, and it was also something that our fans
wanted us to do for a long time, too. During the course of making
the records that we've done in the past, we would occasionally run
across a fan requesting a certain song that was done back in the day.
"You guys should do this by the O'Jays." "You should
do this by the Temptations." So that idea kinda stuck with us.
So we felt like it was an opportunity time to do this album because
it was something that would be a great springboard for our new label...just
kinda release the whole thing, and present to the world our new adventure
as far as being on our own, and having our own independent label,
which is called MSM Music Group.
And as far as picking the songs, it was just more or less, just us
writing down or just thinking about all the songs that we"ve
liked when we were growing up as kids, and it was kinda like a process
of elimination type of thing, and we came up with these few, which
is why we're calling it, "Volume 1." There's no real way
to put all the songs that we like on one album. So this is volume
1, and probably a series of many. |

今度のツアーでは、もちろん新しいアルバムの曲を披露する。今までよりもっと動き回るつもりだよ。メンバーはこれまでどおりの３人だけど、今こそ一歩前進する時だと感じてるんだ。これまで全力を出してなかったという意味じゃない。これまで以上にエネルギッシュに、観客とバイブを感じ、そこの文化と心を通わせるべきだと思ってるんだ。だから、いつもより観客と直接触れあう機会を増やしたい。観客を身近に感じられるように、会場の規模を小さくしたんだ。そうすることで、観客と触れあえる。観客にサインをあげたり、スローバックのロゴが入ったジャージをプレゼントしたりする。僕ら自身でアルバムの販売もするんだ。
僕らが独立した今、ライブはこれまでとまったく違うものになるよ。僕らはMSM Music Groupという自分たちのレーベルにいるわけだから、もうレコード会社の言いなりにならなくてもいい。以前レコード会社に、あれもダメ、これもダメ、と言われてやらせてもらえなかったことが、今はすべてできるんだ。 |

You've come to Japan for
tours before, and what can we expect from the upcoming tour? Any plans
for any surprise? |

| Wanya |
Well, of course we'll be
doing new records. We'll be a lot more mobile. It's the three of us
as you've seen in the past, and we feel like now is just a time to
step up a notch. Not that we were not giving our all in the past,
but it's time to give more energy, the vibe with the people, become
more in tune to the culture. We'll interact with the audience a little
bit more than we normally do. The capacity has changed a little bit
to make it more intimate for us, and that's gonna be a good way to
reach the audience. Up close and personal, and we'll be doing some
signings, and gonna be giving out some Throwback jerseys, and selling
our own records and all kind of things like that. So it's going to
be totally different because we're our own entity now.
You know, we're our own MSM Music Group. We don't have the reigns
of the record company tied around our necks saying, "You can't,
you can't, you can't, you can't, you can't." We can do it all. |
